First time spotting scope and don't want to break the bank, check out this Burris we have. Much less then the 400$ you were looking to spend and great deal of magnification.

Look at the Bushnell Legend 20-60x80mm. For a general all around spotter and a great range spotter it cannot be beat for that range. A 20-60x magnification range is perfect for a variety of uses; range, general viewing, digiscoping. The 80mm lens also gathers plenty of light. This Bushnell also has ED glass which is not often found anywhere near this price. ED glass will prevent chromatic abberation or "color bleeding/blending". You will get very crisp and clear lines on your sight picture. It is by far the best scope I have used at teh $400 mark. We have it for $419 I believe. but all calgunners get 5% off and free shipping. A good spotting scope is worth its weight in gold, nice to be at the range and not regret it. I've used this scope on a clear day at 400+ yards and puicked out 223 holes in the black, hard feat for many others at that price and below it.

Just don't get a barska spotting scope, I learned that lesson. Can't hardly pick out 223 holes on black target at 100 yards, and the eye relief of the scope is terrible. Anything above 20x and you absolutely cannot see out of the scope with range glasses on. Apparently, it was designed to hump the surface of your eyeball.

I just sold my Vortex Impact for a Konus Konuspot 100. HUUUGE improvement.

I can clearly read target ring #s @ 100m, and see .22 holes in the black at 200, .308 holes in the black at 300. Im sure with shoot-n-see's I could easily see more further.

Some reviews say they can read impacts at 600; but I haven't been able to try that yet.
Im just a doode, playin' a doode, disguised as another doode

I purchased one of those from Big 5 and returned it right away after using it once. It never holds a zero. Every time I set it up on my target it always disappeared. That's one POS unit. My old cheap Tasco that I purchased $50.00 used even worked better.

Redfield is made by Leupold now, so you are getting quality. I've looked thru them and they have a nice picture. If you want to save a little more its a nice choice. 60mm objective will not gather as much light as a 80mm though.

                      Alpen 788

Hands down the best scope for the money bar none. I have owned and looked through high end to low end scopes and this is the best bargain. I sold my Pentax after I looked thorough the Alpen pocketed some change for other goodies and bought the Alpen. Here is a rule of thumb I use when ever I am in the market for optics. I go to the bird watchers sights and forums. Nobody is more discriminating than a birder when it comes to glass.
