    1000 yard shooters?

My father has a custom 300 weatherby that he uses for long range shooting & he's looking for a new scope for it. He wants something with either mildots or some other form of range-finding reticle, 1/8 click and a good amount of magnification. I'm guessing he'll spend 600-800 on it tops.

Now the main thing I'm wondering is does anyone here shoot 1000+ yards, and what kind of scope do you use?

Does he really need 1/8th clicks? Is he shooting paper at 1000 or steel?

I have an IOR 4-14x50 and have used it to 865 yards without much issue. It is a little more then $800 but has very clear glass, 25 moa per turn of the elevation knob (on the updated version) and so far very reliable. It has 1/4 moa clicks though.

I am not sure how it will perform at 1000 but there is the Millet TRS-1. It has 1/8th clicks and is 4-16x50.

1/8th clicks aren't really necessary except for the BR crowd. If he really wants that, a Nightforce benchrest model is probably top of the list. But its out of his price range as well.

1/4 min clicks are just fine. I doubt he'll be able to hold better than that anyway. In the $600-800 range, you could take a look at the Bushnell 6-24 here. It has limited internal adjustment so a canted base will probably be necessary. Do some more homework on 1K shooting and optics before you buy. Check snipershide.com and read under the optics section. It'll keep you busy for a while.

FWIW, I've been using a Bushnell 3200 10x mildot at 1000 yards. Its not the best for the job by any means, but it works. That scope (and rifle) are going to be replaced with a Schmidt and Bender 5-25x56 PMII. That'll be the cats meow for 1K shooting.

I shoot competitively 1000 yards with Nightforce NXSes on my 50s. They have 1/4 min clicks and I do just fine with them. But, they are out of his price range.

When you are building a rifle and scope combo, the general rule of thumb is to buy the cheapest rifle that will do what you need it to do and then get the best optics that you can afford.

In his price range the IOR, or Bushnell 4200 series would be the best bet for a new scope. If he doesn't mind a used scope you can find Leupold Mk4 scopes for sale at the top of his price range.

Stay away from 1/8 moa clicks unless he's strictly bench rest shooting.

10X magnification is pretty much the minimum for 1000 yards (though I did quite well using just a 4X).

If he's willing to spend a lot more I'd get a TMR type reticle that's in MOA rather than mils if the knobs are in moa. If he splurged and got a scope (USO, S&B) that can be had with the knobs in mils, then get a reticle in mils. It makes life easier for follow up shots and adjustments.

And yes, I shoot 1000 yards regularly.

I hear Nikon are good value with good warranty. They might be in your price range.

I shoot 950 yards (1000 aint possible at the range) regularly and to 990 or so when no one's around the range: and will get flammed for the scope I use ((They are hit or miss...I got a winner)) but I use a springfield armory's 4x-14x scope. Its been good to me. It is within his price range.

Check out Zak Smith's articles on Practical Long Range shooting and validation on why glass is not where you want to go cheap. That said, if you're Dad ups the money he wants to spend into the $1200 range, he'll be much, much happier.

Thanks for the suggestions all. He's been reading this thread (I think) and now he's after a Leupold MK4 I think it is.

He'd probably be much, much happier with an IOR.

Instead of a Leupold MK4? From what I have heard, the glass on an IOR is right up there with a Leupold and seem to be durable. I have no personal experience with an IOR scope, I'm just curious why he would be happier with the IOR.

I have experience with the mark 4 and own an IOR. The glass on the IOR is better. The new updated IORs have better knobs IMHO. The elevation knob has 25moa of adjustment in a single turn. The finish on the leupy is better but the build of the IOR seems stronger.

They both track very well. Something about the leupy I just didn't like. I also prefer the MP8 reticle.

The glass on the IOR is much better than the loopy. It sounds funny to say that its "right up there" with leupold. Thats an insult to the IOR.

I want to commit to one but can't find the specs of the scope. Is the scope illuminated?
