Which optic for all-around AR build??

    Hey Calgunners,

I'm not very good with optics, so I'm having a hard time choosing here. I am currently running a EoTech on my AR, but it's not working out how I thought it would. After some serious range time, I've decided to go with a close-range scope instead of a holographic display. I'm not sure which to go with here, Trijicon offers two, the TR24 series, which is a 1-4x24 with a 30mm tube, and a TR21, which is a 1.25-4x24 with a one inch tube. I talked to a couple of guys whom shoot LOTS of AR platforms and they have said that the .25 magnification doesnt really come into play for fast aquisition stuff. But my concern is the differnce in sizes of the tubes, one is 24.5mm, the other is 30mm. Which would work out better? I also noticed on the Trijicon site that the eye relief is different between the two, and that the TR21 has a range while the TR24 does not. My concern with an AR is that when I bring the rifle up, it may not always be perfect, and I dont want the black ring of death in my field of view, which is why I went with the EoTech in the first place. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    **EDIT**
I've checked out the Trijicons, thinking about switching or adding options. If there are any recommendations for a 1x power to 4, 5, or even 6, please let me know. I'd like something that illuminates, but I'd like to hear your feedback on the pros and cons. My budget is about $1100-1200 including mount... =D

But I guess the real question is why the 30mm tube... what is the gains with it compared to the one inch tube? As for the reticle, I'd think the German #4 is more of what I'd be used to. It seems like the triangle would be harder to find quickly. Am I wrong?

I have TR24 mounted in Trijicon mount made by Bobro Engineering. The 30 mm tube gathers more light. The green triange is the best becasuse it is the wavelength of light that is most easily visible to the eye. I purchased mine for my OBR 556. I've used it a the range maybe 3 times. Reason I wanted to shoot longer ranges.

So I purchased a Nightfore NSX 2.5-10 also mounted in a Bobro Engineeering mount. I shoot accurately to 600 yards with this scope down to 10 yards.

I may want sell my Accupoint that is in like new condition it's a 1-4 power model with Butler creek caps on each end.

Reasons I may sell. Don't use it and I have a S&B 5-25x56 scope on order for my TRG-22. I'm really more interested in shooting long range even with my 16" barreled OBR 556.

If you are interested in purchasing it with mount send me a PM. I will have to figure what I want for it and I'm sure you will want photos which I can take.

How fast can you focus on close in targets ( under 50 yards) and what kind of recticle do you have?.. Kinda been having this debate myself as I tend to like going a little longer with my shooting but still want close in ability

              I've had all 3 -

              TR21 Red Triangle
TR24 German No. 4 Amber Dot
              TR24G Green Triangle

              Some thoughts:
              1. I can shoot at 1x significantly faster with the TR24 vs the TR21. The TR24 is also brighter and the eye relief stays constant when you zoom 1-4x, the TR21 changes.
              2. The TR21 will be cheaper.
              3. The German No. 4 is more precise and easier to shoot past 300 yards. If you go this route, get the Amber dot as the Green dot disappears in heavy foliage. Also, the reticule dot will disappear in low light.
              4. The TR24G is the best general purpose optic IMO. You can shoot it almost as fast as a red dot (about 93% speed in my shot timer tests) and can shoot out to 300y using holdover. It sits on my class/home defense gun.

NP-R2 reticle. Time for eyes to focus on target would only be limited by time to turn power up or down and time to hold rifle still enough to see target. Not sure I understand that part of your question. For me this setup is perfect for type of shooting I've been doing with rifle.

That said if I shot 200 to very short range I think I would prefer the TR24G. If I have not already mentioned green is the wavelength of light most visible to our eyes.

The Nightforce is much more precise because of it's traditional crosshair reticle, at least for me.

SuperSet summed it up, he's got a lot of time behind those optics.

IMO, if you're trying to decide between these two models, cost is the only reason to consider the TR21 over the TR24. Otherwise, TR24 is the easy choice.

German #4 crosshair green dot is great. I like it over the triangle because at distances it give a precision aiming point and at 1x you still have quick recognition.

Thanks for all the info folks, I think I'll be going for the TR42G... I just hope the dot doesn't get lost as SuperSet mentioned. Is there something else other than Trijicon that you guys would recommend?

The TR24G is the green triangle and you will not lose it, it's flaming bright! It's the German No. 4 reticules that can get lost sometimes (TR24-3 and TR24-3G).
If you don't need it for HD, check out the Burris Tac-30, if you can find it in stock.

                          Hey folks,

I've checked out (finally) a Trijicon TR24. It seems to work great for faster transitioning stuff or CQB, but it seems to be a bit harder to do midrange accurate shots, or at least for me. Someone mentioned the SWFA SS optics, which have a very different reticle from what I understand. Does anyone have any experience with these? There were some other brands, but some were a bit out of my price range. I'm trying to keep this under $1100 with mount (which is $200ish) if this helps at all.

I'm not sure if you are looking for an illuminated reticle or not, but a 1.5-6 might be what you are looking for. US Optics makes one, but it's just a bit out of your price range.

And on the other end of the spectrum I just got a Vortex Viper that looks good so far, 2-7x32 but the reticle choices are less than ideal, no illum, but the price is good. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

                              Hello,

Great options, I've looked at the USO, but yes, it is a bit out of my price range. My significant other is resticting the budget for the AR because I need to spend the rest of my tax return on her AR, and it's not cheap. Luckily she wanted my EXPS 3 for hers... THANK GOD she didnt want an actual optic, I would have to sell a kidney with her taste. hahahaha
