    Optics for backup AR...

    ANOTHER UPDATE

The PRIMARY ARMS MICRO RED DOT SIGHT W/ OPTIONAL TALL MOUNT arrived today. Ordered it on Friday, shows up on Monday at noon. Very impressive.

It seems very sturdy and well made. The dot gets very bright. I am impressed. If it holds Zero, like everyone who owns one says it does, then this is going to turn out to be a wise purchase.

It would be nice if the power dial did not continually spin around passed the highest level but stopped on 0 and on 10 so you knew without looking at the dial what setting you were on and if it were actually turned off. I'm going to have to be extra careful not to accidentally turn it too far and leave it on, when I think I turned it off. But that is a really minor complaint. So many other things about the sight are right on, especially for the money. It seems like you get more than you pay for.

I did not weigh them side by side but the tall mount feels heavier than the Larue mount. However, the Larue mount on its own costs more than the Primary Arms Sight and Tall Mount put together (or damn close to it). So one can't exactly complain. It is light enought and just the like sight, the mount seems very solid. I especially like the QR lever.

Oh, and it did come with a Hat that will be used as a stocking stuffer for my father this year. He likes hats.

    Here is the updated picture...

    UPDATE

Time to break out the head slap boys, I went the cheap root. I ordered a Primary Arms Micro Dot Sight with the Tall Riser. I like the weight, and the price. Worst case, a few months from now it will end up in an offset mount and I'll order a higher end scope with some magnification to it. For now, I have two run-n-gun rifles at the weight that is right for my me. This option leaves money in the bank for the Glock or 1911 I have been craving.

While I am not expecting it to be my XPS, everything I have read about Primary Arms has been good. All pretty sums up to "it is damn good for the money". So long as it holds zero, the dot is visible, and has anything close to the battery life promised, I will be pleased.

    ORIGINAL POST

For the life of me I cannot make up my mind what optics I want to put on my backup AR. I keep going back and forth on even what kind of optics. The bottom line is I don't want to poor a lot of money into it, but I don't want it to be complete cheese either.

My primary AR has an EoTech XPS 2.0 on it. I am not sure I want to poor that kind of money into optics for a rifle that will not get used very often, and already has way too much money invested into it.

The weight of the rifle is just about right as it is for running and gunning. So if I am going to use it strictly for that, I definately need to go with something light weight such as the VORTEX SPARC or a PRIMARY ARMS MICRO SIGHT.

However, I am also tempted, based on the barrel it has on it, to use it as a cross between a back-up run and gun rifle and as as a range whore in which case I would want something with magnification. At a bare minimum that would be a MILLETT DMS IN A LARUE MOUNT (to match my Larue Rail). The downside being, the weight of the DMS combined with the fact that is is already heavy means it will rarely get used for running and gunning and the low power of the DMS means it won't be an ideal range whore either. It is also twice as expensive as the first option.

Then again, I am also really tempted to put something with a lot of magnification on it and use it solely for plinking at the range. If I do this, I am not sure what optic I will choose as everything I like for this is out of my current price range.

    Decisions, decisions!

I actually got so annoyed I almost sold it, just so I wouldn't have to spend the money on another optic.

Clearly there are worse problems to have, just thought I would see if anyone else has some ideas.

Get the variable scope since you already have the reflex sight. You'll get experience with 2 different optic systems and can choose the right tool for the job. I run a TR24 on my primary gun and AP M2 on the backup.

I'm tempted, but I already know where I fall on which is better between the two for a CQB rifle. If I do it won't be as nice as yours. Can't justify it right now.

I'm on something like my 20th AR? I enjoy building them as much as shooting them. So I have tried the options before. I'm just not used to putting myself on a budget.

No, this is the 20th I've built since discovering they were legal in CA. I've sold them, and in 2 cases gave them away (yes we did the DROS) to close friends.

I'll see some wierd variant in a photo or something and build it to try it out and see if I like it. If I don't like it better than my primary, or I get a bug to build something else, or I run into cashflow problems...it gets sold off. Building them is as much fun as shooting them. But I cannot afford to keep them all.

I mentioned it above to emphasize that I am not exactly new. I've tried most of what it is out there in one form or another. Not every brand, but most of the differnt kinds of things. I just can't decide what to do with this one now that the economy is crap and money is tight. Normally I just spend away but things are different these days, and I have other things on the wish list as well.

2 is 1 so I'd say you're covered as far as ARs. To save some moolah, you could opt for a CMR or Burris Tac30 in a Burris PEPR mount. Then you'll have a decent range gun and still have ur EOTech as a go-to gun.

I'll see what kind of deal my suppliers have on them and if I like them. I've just been really impressed with what little I have read about the Vortex. It is no aimpoint, but it seems to be an impressive little sight.

The untold factor here is that I am also in the market for a handgun. So what I am trying to do is make both purchases in a timely manner.

I've got bug up my rear to pickup both a 1911 and a Glock in the next few months.

The AR does have irons and I am pretty damn good with them. I've run courses with just irons (Aimpoint went down during a course). So it's not like it is useless. Still meets the 2 is 1 and one is none. Just right now I am none is none in the handgun department.

Check out the Burris TAC30 that Superset mentioned, it looks like a pretty decent bargain optic. But don't forget then you need to buy a mount too.

But re: handgun ... following on the logic, two is one, one is none -- then none is negative! lol Get thee a Glock, pronto!!

It does feel really weird not having a Glock to dry fire practice with at night.

Weaver 1-3x in a LaRue mount.

It is half the weight and two inches shorter than the DMS. Oh and it's cheaper and is better built.

I had a DMS until I realized I was getting no advantage for all that extra weight.

I ran a Primayarms with their magnification. I only put 1500 rounds thru it since I got it a month ago and I gotta say the micro dot has held zero. The magnification isnt the best but it also works too, spending 150 for the micro dot w/riser and 3x magnification with mount...not a bad deal.

Oh I also bout a m4 primary arms for my backup AR too. That one hasabout 600 rounds thru her and shes held zero too.

Not bad at all for the price.

Trijicon 1-4 TR24 is a great optic for a 18"-20" set up since you have the XPS on your 16" set up

Both riffles have barrels that are technically 16". The stainless barrel is a tad longer since it is 16.5" plus the hider and the M4 is 14.7 plus a perm. attached hider. In the case of my barrel, it is not the length that makes it a precision barrel but the material it is made out of and the twist rate. It has a 1:7 twist so it can stabilize heavier match grade ammo. It also has a Chip McCormick match grade trigger.

So I get your point. If you are going to have high end barrel designed for match grade ammo and a match grade trigger, magnification makes sense.

I say go with a strong optic strictly for range use. Or for long distance shooting. I would go for a variable with mil-dot reticle. Leupold AR scopes are good, also Bushnell Tactical scopes and nikon buckmaster scopes. All these scope can be found for under $400. I would slap a Bushnell 5-15x40 mildot on it, just to have fun at the range.
                            just my opinion.

Nikon M223 the 1-4 is an excellent low priced option.
I recently purchased one and replaced the Aimpoint M3 with Aimpoint 3x that I had on that rifle.
Finally a low valued but excellent glass lightweight 1-4.
I am impressed with the clarity and the retical design. I can do come ups if I choose, and I can see if this type of optic is the only way to go on the 5.56/223.
Additonally, I can now get some more use out of that rifle. I also have a rifle with a trijicon acog 4X32. That has been my go to rifle for anything beyond 100 yards, but below 400. It seemed the fixed 4X for me made for slower transitions under 100 yards.
The low price Nikon will allow me to define if this is the way I feel I want to go.
I have always felt a low power varible makes for the perfect optic which takes advantage of the excellent accuracy potential of that wonderful cartridge.
If I like this, I will then get the TR24... but then, we have shotshow coming.
                              Ummmm... Shotshow...

                              Anyways, consider the Nikon M223.
