    mini 14 scope?

I am way new to this forum and really do not know where to begin.

I want to put a scope on my mini 14. Can I purchase "one that works" for under 200.00? Where do I begin? Is buying a used scope recomended? What do I need? Are they easy to site in once I mount it or do I pay someone? ...I would think it is only something that can be done at the range!? Thanks for your help.

    I use a Leupold VX-I 3x9 40mm and it works just fine.

I think many will agree that the Nikon Prostaff or Bushnell Elite 3200's will be the best bang for your buck.

And depending on the application of your rifle, you may not need 9x if you plan on carrying this rifle around. 2-7 or 4x may be suitable.

I just put a straight 4X on my mini14 and mini30. They work fine. I put on Weaver brand as I got them on sale and weaver is a good brand. Simmons /Burris/some bushnells/redfield would also be good. It would be hard to beat a Leupold and you can get one off e-bay in a straight 4X or a 2X7 for the money you are talking. NEVER worry about Leupold as it has a forever warr to whoever owns it. You do not have to be the first buyer or show any proof etc. IFand that is a mighty big if it breaks send to to Leupold and they will fix or replace it at no charge.

Wow thanks for all the comments and help! I guess I need to find pricing on this stuff next...what is a good way to mount the scope on the mini? I saw one mounting system last night and people were baging on the quality or the way it won't stay tight on the gun & one person said it just fell off while he was treking through the woods!! No Bueno! So I don't want to get hosed with some cheap, non-durable, "my scope falls off the gun" mounting kit either! I really like the idea of being able to use the iron sites.
Thanks for all the help!..That is the biggest reason I like this site!

I think the best quality for money scope are the new Redfield scopes that are made by Leupold in the good old USA. They have a lifetime warrenty on these scopes. You can get a 1" tube Redfield in 2-7X for well under $200. If you still have the free rings that came with your mini-14 you can use those and save yourself some money.
I think Thor's hammer was an 45-70 lever action loaded with Garrett cartridges.

I find that 90% of the questions asked here have been answered 20 or more years ago by Jeff in hid Gargantuan Gunsite Gossip books.

"What are "Free Rings"? I bought my Mini 14 used. I don't remember getting anything extra that was not already on the gun.

New minis (Ranch Models) come with a pair of Ruger Rings.

This guy has some for $20.00.

If yours isn't a ranch you will have to go with a side mount or go scout style.

What do you want to do with it? Target shoot at range you say? what distance? Any chance you might take it hunting?

There are certainly many nice scopes for < $200. PM me for used scope at $100.
At $200, I'd put all that money into optics and leave behind any of the "tactical" features.

I would buy the vortex viper 2-7 that is on clearance at cameraland and swfa for 175. It is almost half off right now. I just bought one and it is going on mu cz 527

what ever you do, do not buy a ncstar side mount...pos i had to wedge paper between the mount and reciever to take out the horrible wiggle
