quick question. How far forward are you supposed to mount an aimpoint? and what are the pros and cons of moving it back and forth.

Some will argue field of view, but it's a red dot and both eyes should be open anyway. I think it's mainly preference and weight balance.

Preference in that, for you, do you find it easier to acquire the dot quickly if it is closer or farther away from you? How consistently do you mount the rifle? Try it from strong side, weak side, and in various/unconventional positions (standing, kneeling, prone, urban prone, SBU prone, supine, etc) and decide for yourself.

Weight balance in that the CompM4 is on the heavier side. Having it far forward as you show in your photo would make the rifle too front heavy for my taste... Then do you plan to add a weapon mounted light, other rail mounted accessories, etc etc too? That will make your rifle even more front heavy. So consider how the rifle will handle for you in the ways that you plan to use it.

Oh, final point -- if you plan to add a magnifier like the Aimpoint 3X later -- while the CompM4 itself has unlimited eye relief, the magnifier does not. And you should have the optic as close to the magnifier as you can. So if you are going to run a magnifier, you have no choice, you'll have to mount your CompM4 toward the rear.

thanks for the info, you're right about the rifle being on the front heavy side. I'v just moved the aimpoint back a few rails. not quite sure if im going to run a magnifier just yet. Its way too pricey

Cool, if you're not sure where you like it, you can learn a lot by just trying different positions in the comfort of your own home. Of course, be safe !!! Mount the optic in different spots and try it out in different shooting positions.

Also, not sure how much further back you moved it, but I try to avoid bridging the upper receiver & handguard with optics.

i wondered about bridging the two. is it really bad?

I have mine where the front part of the mount is just covering the FF rail. From the pics you have a continuous rail. Just put it to where the weight balance feels right.

might not be able to see it very well in this pic, but it is where I have it. Also leaves room for a magnifier.

roughly 2-4" benched on avg. At ASR I can easily pick off the steel out to 400 yrds. 500-600 is a bit harder.

Both, the red dot and magnifier are quick detach.
