Going on my first rifle but I have a question. What the hell is this, and whats it for?

That loops through the bipod and connects to the front sling swivel on your rifle.I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.
As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap. -

Yup, the nub on the clamping piece grabs onto the sling stud after you stick it up through the base of the bipod, and the thumbwheel tightens/clamps everything down.
