I would skip the combo and just get a 5x prism scope. I have a Vortex Spitfire Gen 2 on my Tavor SAR that I like very much.

Only bummer about that is I lose my 1x.

Maybe i could just use Irons for my 1x and have the 5x on a flip-to-side mount? Not sure how well that would hold zero though lol

If you can do with 3x, go that route. I've used the UTG 3x and that thing is indestructible and holds zero perfectly on 300 BO, 6.5 Grendel, and .308. Out of the box they need just a smidge of grease on the pivot point as for some reason they put so little on at the factory you'll think it's frozen after a few shots.

They are really inexpensive but they are spot on when it comes to adjustability and quality until you start spending 5-6 times the amount and even then it's a diminishing return.

If you have to have 5-6x then maybe a low pro scope coupled with an offset dot would do it for you.

Like you, the 1x is important and I find for the intermediate cartridges like 300BO and the 7.62x39, the 1X is the go to and there the lesser MOA coverage of the dot is far more important than magnification. I barely use the magnifier at all but glad it's there.

A used Eotech G45 might be within budget

You should check out the Vortex 6x Magnifier.

Just put a scope and an offset mount for the red dot. Best of both worlds.

My AR-15 is set with EoTech (Green dot) and their 3x magnifier. I took a course with it and we were reaching out to 500Y reliably. For me the field of view on the 5X would be too small to like (if I were not going past 500Y) and my eyes aren't so good so I would start thinking of magnification once I hit 50Y and greater. If I had a 5X I think that's too much for 50-100Y. So for an AK set up where presumably you're not reaching out past 500Y I'd think3X > 5X.

Exactly. Field of view will suffer with a 5X and most likely eye relief as well. I have read positive reports on Eotech's G45 though. But I do find 3X magnifiers to be more than adequate for AR and AK setups.

                    I made a thread on Trijicon's 3X magnifier here a while ago if you're interested... https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/....php?t=1600656
