Default Trijicon 3x magnifier

Mine just arrived today. Mounted it behind an Eotech EXPS2 on a DDM4V7 that used to bear a LVPO. Was going to go with Eotech's new G43 (or perhaps their G45) but those won't be shipping until late spring/early summer and I'm impatient. Plus I like the price tag on the Trijicon better.

Anyway, this thing lines up great behind the EXPS2 and I'm glad they decided to use the same exact flip-to-side mount that Eotech uses for their magnifiers. I'm not sure how it compares in size and weight to the G43 but it is definitely smaller and lighter than my G33 that I have on another rifle. Glass is excellent and crystal clear as you'd expect from Trijicon.

One thing that has to be said though....I simply cannot believe that Trijicon didn't engineer this thing to fit above Troy folding rear sights! The magnifier was unable to completely deploy because the bottom was hitting the body of the Troy sight - thus it sat at a very noticeable cant which is completely unacceptable. So I grinded off part of the iron sight until the magnifier was able to totally snap in to position the way it should. And I had to grind off a fair bit of that sight to be honest. Hopefully the last two photos below will illustrate exactly what I'm talking about. I know there's a lot of back-up iron sights out there now that are more "low-pro" than the Troys but I have a hard time believing that Troy irons aren't still very popular and still sit on top of many rifles out there so the fact that Trijicon didn't make this magnifier compatible with them (without modification) had me shaking my head a bit.

Probably because most guys don’t even run a BUIS anymore.

Bummer. I still like troys better than most because of how solid they are. Hope the g43 fits with them. Thanks for sharing

Nice looking rifle! Even though I'm running both a Trijicon Acog and RMR Type 2 on my rifle which with both of those being more than enough still, I still run Troys too.

Eye relief is VERY generous. The G33 has excellent eye relief as well and the Trijicon seems just as good if not better. *EDIT: Just checked the specs and yes the Trijicon has even longer eye relief...68mm compared to the Eotech's 55.8mm

Here's a pic I took so you guys can kinda see a size comparison. The Trijicon feels a lot lighter as well. But notice how the G33 has no problem clearing the Troy sights!

Thanks. The black one is my MK18 (SBR) with an Advanced Armament SR5 suppressor. I ordered both as soon as I finally left California and been training with it a lot ever since. The other rifle is a standard 16" Daniel Defense M4V7.

Photos below are a little older. The MK18 is still exactly the same but the M4V7 obviously no longer wears the Accupoint 1-4. I don't think I will ever go back to an LPVO. I never found myself using the in-between magnifications (2x or 3x); it was always either 1 or 4. Furthermore, at the 1 setting I was never as fast as a standard red dot sight as evidenced through timed drills and competitions that I've done. I am totally sold on red-dots with a flip to side magnifier behind it. It just makes more sense for me. If I want precision at 500 yards and beyond I have other tools in the box for that. Again, this is just what works better for me.

With so many good LPVO options why did you choose this type of setup... personally I dropped this type of setup in 2010 and would never go back. Just curious.

I pretty much explained this in post #9. Nothing wrong with LPVO's and yes there are some phenomenal ones out there, I have just found for me personally and my application of a defensive rifle I prefer the setup that I have instead.

I actually did consider the Elcan SpecterDR. It actually makes more sense to me than a LPVO. However, with the Eotech/Trijicon magnifier combo I am still coming in at 6 ounces less than the Elcan. That thing is heavy. Not to mention very expensive.
