I don't believe there is a best all around personally. ARs can be used in such a wide variety of ways that each can serve a dramatically different function.

The Holographic sight will be the fastest with a red dot being just slightly behind. An Aimpoint will definitely be able to handle more abuse.

A quality LVPO will give the AR the most flexibility from short range to longer range precision, however it is slower at close range than the Holographic or red dot.

There are people that practice with it enough to be as fast as a red dot or holo but I'd bet there isn't as much flexibility in non standard shooting positions.

I run every option and I'm not as fast with an LVPO.

If you want flexibility of close and long range, LVPO is best.

If you want pure speed and aren't going to engage past say, 200-300 yards, holographic or red dot.

If I only owned one AR, it would have an Aimpoint T-2 and a magnifier with a flip to side mount.

that said, for $450, the swampfox arrowhead 1-10 is better in pretty much every way.
I keep hearing good things about the Swampfox 1-10x, I'd like to check one out in person. But if I wanted 10x magnification up top with a <$500 budget, I would much prefer a 2-10x scope with a larger objective lens.

yeah, i didn't jump until the resident optics guru on snipershide checked it out and said it was gtg for the price optically.
everything is a compromise of some kind, and i wanted something i could shoot with both eyes open like a red dot, and still have 10x power for tiny targets.

Is the Swampfox FFP? Seems like being required to dial all the way up to 10x for a 556 is overkill.

Integrated iron sights are cool on those mounts.

1x4 is smaller and 4x is good enough for 500 yard

For FFP optic most are either on 1X or 10X and don't use anything in between except maybe to scan. The downside to a SFP is your hold overs/sub tensions are not accurate except where you zeroed at which is usually at the highest magnification.

idk what all around means exactly. The type of rifle that shoots well at 500y is not that type that you swing around at 25 or 50y. If your looking to get both you'll likely end up with neither. With that being said a decent scope with at least 12x and a 45degree offset open irons or red dot would cover allot.

                        why not?

in the post xiden wasteland of america, you may need something for zombies up close and for hunting rodents to survive. a dmr may be ideal.

If your eyes are 20/20 and you are under 50 then I would say Aimpoint hands down for the .223 AR platform. If your eyes are not 20/20 or you are over 50 then 1-6 better.

Ever since I was a kid playing paintball with friends in our local “jungle”, I used iron sights, scopes and red dots and I always thought a red dot with a “scope” behind it would be the perfect optic. Now, it has not only become a reality, it seems to be an extremely popular option.

I went with Holosun 510 with green reticle and 3x flip to side magnifier. To me, it’s the perfect setup because you get quick target acquisition accuracy and ease at closer ranges and the magnifier to do the same at longer ranges. The flip to side feature is something I didn’t think about as a kid and makes the whole package even more functional on top of quick release just in case. Only thing I would have liked is if it used the holographic reticle like EOtech but the mentioned drawbacks battery’s life, no shake to wake, no solar backup and more than double the price made my decision pretty easy to go with Holosun.

                              A strong left eye dominance… Aging eyes, etc… Left-handed shooter with a right-handed rifle.

Eotech XPS2-2 and a Vortex VMX-3T magnifier is on my “all purpose” AR.
