    Need ACOG help

Hi guys, I've been saving up and can now pick up an ACOG for my Daniel Defense M4V7. Now thr question is which model? I've seen that the TA31RCO-M4CP is made for the M4 carbine but it says for a 14.5 inch barrel. The DD is a 16 inch barrel. Will this effect the usage?

Any help or recommendations would help so much.

    Thanks

I've been using a ta11 and ta33's for 3 of my AR's for years now and the main reason I went to those models is eye relief. I do not like sticking the charging handle on my nose.

No need to copy govt employees gear unless US is paying you to do it.

As to barrel length, I cannot say I notice any difference between a 16" vs M4 length. I practice from 5 to 400 yards.

    * I shoot lots of steel cased as well as PMC (223A load) and xm193/xm855

I like the TA02 AA LED model, but like all ACOGs you have to have pretty good eye sight or you have to use your glasses and since I want a SHTF optic I'm stuck with either a magnifier/RDS or a LPVO and 12:00 piggy backed RDS because I need it to be NOD capable.

I've been keeping notes on ACOGs, as both eye relief and weight are important to me. Here's what I've put together from various arfcom posts:

TA31/TA01/TA02 - Good weight, size, and FOV...….at the expense of eye relief.
TA33 - Good weight, size, and eye relief...….at the expense of FOV.
TA11/TA110 - Good eye relief and FOV...….at the expense of size and weight.
            TA02 is 4x32 LED, no fiber optics/tritium

The TA11 has the best performance and overall view through the optic. What kills it is the size and weight; it is as big and heavy as many LPVOs, and for that reason, I don't recommend it. An LPVO has many advantages over a fixed 3.5x, so if you would consider the TA11, an LPVO would be better.

The TA50 3x24 and TA33 3x30 are both fantastic optics, however. Light, compact, clear, bright. The more common TA33 has the obvious drawback of a narrow field of view, but great eye relief. The TA50, much less common to see, is severely underrated. I find that even though it has shorter eye relief, it has an excellent field of view which offsets this drawback. It feels like a miniature TA31 4x32, or maybe even a miniature TA11 in some ways. Even though the TA50 has short eye relief, it is not as short as the TA31, and does not feel like a bottleneck.
All in all, for a single do all low power fixed optic, the TA50 3x24 is hard to beat. But the TA33 3x30 is great as well.

One thing I've never seen mentioned about the ta33 is low light performance. If you own a 33, and also one of the larger ACOGS, go outside at dawn or dusk and try scanning a treeline or into shaded cover. The 33 is really difficult to make out any details, while the 11 is much better and the 31 is incredible. It's not just the exit pupil but the "size" of the image being much bigger in the larger ACOGS that allow you to see details. The image size (along with fov) of the 33 is very small.
I love the form factor of the 33 but for me it's only really usable in good light.

            Light weight 1
            Good eye relief 2
            Good field of view 3
            Pick two.
            1, 2 = ta33
            1, 3 = ta31
            2, 3 = ta11

Respect to this level of research! I learned more about the different models in that one post than I have in 10 years of being on this forum

I have a TA 3 14X 32 green Chevron by far my favorite optic

I have a TA31-ECOS and it's the only ACOG I kept out of the several models I owned. Once I got used to shooting nose to charging handle, the eye relief was no longer a problem. I really like the RMR mounted on top for CQB with a heads up position.

I agree with this as well one of the few scopes that still works with my terrible eyesight and I think part of that is attributed to the extremely short eye relief

Last year I picked up a 3.5x35 TA11-G, I was looking for a Red Cheveron but found a used one with a green chevron almost new at a steal of a price so I went for it.

I really like it a lot. Been to the range with it a couple of times now. Once I sighted it in it was hard not to continue to hit the center of the target.

Only downside (it's a small one imo) is that in the daylight the reticle is bright. I put a small towel to cover the tritium and it solved that issue.

This review helped me make my choice of a TA11. Review compares many of the most popular Acogs side by side.

Here are pics of many of the reticles outdoors.

Edit: This is on a 16" barrel also.

I have seen people put electrical tape on the light pipes to regulate the brightness peels back and sticks back down readily

This past week, I put my "old" TA33 on one of my rifles. I forgot how damn clear the glass was, everything was super crisp. And as mentioned boringly awesome eye relief...the things a sleeper.
