    Scope for Savage 10FP

Hello Gents/Ladies, since I am new to having a long range rifle and optics, I thought I would ask the more knowledgeable people in this forum.

I am looking for some opinions/suggestions for what kind of optics I should get to fit my shooting. I am hoping to shoot in the 100-500 yd range (most likely keep to what Burro has for longest, maybe Lytle Creek time to time). I am just starting out, so I would still need to learn the gun/optics and the basics of long range precision shooting. My budget is limited to $300 max. The reason I kept it sorta low is because I am not looking to do competitions with this, just plain ole target shooting/bragging rights between friends. But I would still like to get decent groupings at the long ranges if/when my skills reach that point. I have done some limited research through this site, and a few others on what are the best budget optics are out there but with my class finals coming up I can't spend anymore time.

From my research here are the few I found to be typically recommended:
    1. http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ItemD...aspx?sku=14760
    2. http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/57777-34.html
    3. http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/37095-34.html
    4. http://www.natchezss.com/Optics.cfm?...e%20(20x-50mm)
    5. http://www.natchezss.com/optics.cfm?...MIL%20DOT%20TT

I know some of these range in pricing, but they all had some form of recommendation from people on forums around the net. Now I am favoring the Mil-Dot ones more than the other types for reticle because of the ease of ranging and more versatilities, but I would rather get the best bang for buck. Same goes for variable power, would like it, but not limited to.

Thanks for taking the time to read and give opinions/suggestions.

Although I prefer a variable scope, so I would get the 4.5-14 Buckmaster with mildots.

Shop on ebay with live.com 8% off. Less expensive with that route.

Get the Bushnell 3200 10x. Mike at CSgunworks or Scott at Liberty Optics will most likely beat those prices delivered. Use the extra hundred you save and get some decent match ammo. It ain't cheap.

Burro has a range longer then 100 yds?

Out of the ones you listed, I'd go for the Nikon 4-14x40 SF. Brunos has it 50 bucks cheaper than the link you posted. They also have the best Bushnell prices: 10x and 5-15x tacticals.

But I'd also consider Vortex if I were you. Or with a bit more investment, Sightron SII or Big Sky.

i think burro is at 100yds, but since i haven't been there yet, and their website is very lacking in any decent info, hence why i wrote whatever longest range burro has, and anything further i'll visit lytle creek but that won't be till i get use to shooting at 100yds decently.

and thanks for the link to brunos, that is cheaper than the other website i found with the live cashback at $261 after shipping. i guess brunos doesn't charge shipping? all the options for shipping, even next day has a $0.00 next to them, which is great if it is true.

At the risk of being pooped on, I'll suggest the FM Optics 4-14X44 Mil Spec scope: http://www.dkgtrading.com/famousmaker/fmmil.html

Yes, It's made by bottom of the barrel optics manufacturer "Famous Maker".

It's also made from the same components used for the Falcon Menace 4-14X44 FFP scope, which is widely regarded as a pretty decent optic for long range shooting on a budget. The FM optics scope is even cheaper though, at about $160 vs $390. The biggest difference I can see between the two is that the FM Optics scope comes with a standard Mil Dot reticle instead of the extended reticles available on the Falcon Menace scope.

They don't go through the same quality control as the Falcon Menace scopes, so there is a higher chance of getting a lemon. FM Optics/Famous Maker also doesn't seem to have any kind of warranty or repair support available. Having said that, these seem like a very well put together scope. Operation is very smooth for the power and parallax adjustment. Windage and elevation clicks are kind of soft, but have very audible clicks. Total travel for windage and elevation is 75 MOA. Eye relief is about 3.5 to 4 inches at 14X and clear all the way out to around 9 or 10 inches at 4X. Glass is surprisingly clear, and the parallax knob works well for focusing into a nice crisp image. It also comes with a decent set of aluminum rings similar to the Burris XTR's. They are pretty high though, suited more for mounting to a flat top AR than a bolt action rifle. For mounting to my Savage 10FP, I'm using a Farrell 20MOA base with a set of 30mm low rings. The Objective still sits about 5/16" above the barrel.

Brunos will charge shipping, you just won't know how much until later. Later as in when the package arrives. On top of that they'll charge you a $3 handling fee.

Yeah...Brunos will be almost the same $$$ after all is said and done. $250.80+3+about twelve bucks=$266.

Question: what's live cashback? The Cheaper Than Dirt link in the first post showed the scope at $299.99. How do you get it down to $261 after shipping?

you goto bing.com (guess microsoft changed their live.com search name)

it is MS way of getting more users to use their search engine. they offer a cashback program that if you search for a product with their search engine, they will would offer a XX% cashback from cost of the product to your account (which you setup once you order and MS sends you a email) then after 60 days(so people don't return and keep money) you can take the money out of the account and MS will send you a check with the amount.

it may seem complicated reading it but its very easy to follow/do.

ok i am going to be serious, i dont know a thing about scopes or thier measurements, and i am some what in a similar situation. i am currently in the process of purchasing a savage .223, not quite sure which one to go with, but i would like to get into some distance shooting and thought i would try and kill 2 birds with one stone in this thread.

anyone have any recomendations on a decent rifle/scope combo for some longer range cayote shooting? say maybe 300-500 yd range. i have heard a lot of good things about the savages from numberous people and this is why i would like to get into one. thanks in advance...

                            david

EDIT: is a savage 12 fv in .223 to big of a gun for a beginner?

                              Scopes

To answer the question above...no 223 is not too big for a beginner. You'll be wanting a 308 before the month is out.

Re scopes...I put a Bushnell 3200 Elite on my 300 win mag and it was fine.
Then I got a Super Sniper from swfa for my AR10 and I love it.
Super Sniper is a little more money but way more scope in my own humble
