I use these for long term storage (over 10 years) with great results. Never a speck of rust.

I'd be worried about battery failure or leaking after long term storage. Iron sights or an optic with an etched reticle would be more reliable.

You could store the battery separately, so if it leaked it wouldn't destroy the red dot. You'd want to have quality battery that wasn't counterfeit, so that would let out the Chinese batteries that come with the optic, or the counterfeits sold on Amazon labeled as Eveready, Duracell, etc.

If this is going to be left for long periods of time unattended, I'd just go with fixed sights and call it a day. An A2 Carry handle is always good, or you can go with Daniel Defense. Does your rifle already have a fixed front sight? If not, the DD fixed front & rear are excellent choices:
