ruger 10/22 red dot or scope

Hello Looking for a red dot or a scope for my new build 10/22 ruger platform. This will be my first optic or scope. I will be shooting at less than 100 yards. Thank you budget preferred under 50. Thank you

I'd go with a red dot. I have a custom 10/22 with a scope and, while it's very accurate, it's less fun to shoot because I need a rest for it. An inexpensive red dot off Amazon make it much more versatile and chasing a tin can around is much easier.

For the ranges you’re taking about, I suggest RDS.
But if you could spend closer to $100, Ultradot would be the way to go

Mueller makes a very nice high power target scope with an illuminated reticle.

Under $50? It's hard to recommend anything in that price range, although I've had good results with a $20 Fieldsport red dot from Amazon.

For up to and around $100, look at Hawke Vantage line, specifically the 2-7, Simmons 22 mag line, and Bushnell's trs-25. Bushnell also has some scopes in this price range. My 1st .22 scope was a 4x Bushnell, second was a Simmons 22 mag 3-9. Both worked well, but eventually were replaced by better glass. I've heard Muller is also good for budget optics, but have no experience with them.

If you can step up to the $200 range, scopes from good companies like Leupold, Vortex, Sightron, better Bushnell's, Primary Arms, etc become available.

Other than that, I'd recommend staying away from everything else, especially below $100. Imho and experience, they are just not worth the money

I use both a Primary Arms RDS and a Leupold 2-7X. Depends on what type of shooting I'm doing. Plinking cans, RDS. Shooting paper or small targets further away 2-7x.

I paid a lot more than 50 for the lightweight 2-7X even though it was on sale. I suggest starting with a RDS unless you are trying to learn how to use an optic.

Maybe just put good iron sights on it. I can shoot into the same hole at 50' with this one "Williams 63330 WGRS-RU22 Guide Receiver Rear Peep Sight with Front Sight" that is sold on Bezos's website.

I tried Nikon 2-7x32 "Tactical" and I was not happy with it. Eye relief is very finicky and it changes with the magnification. It's probably a specifics of all the scopes in that range.

We have Simmons 22 Mag's on all of ours. Take out the eye of a squirrel at 75 yards.

I use a BSA Sweet .22 on my build.
Only thing stock is the receiver. Thing is lights out accurate...almost boring, really. I was going to put a fancy scope on at the end of my build. But took it to the range and was so pleased with the groups and how far out I could tack drive, I just kept in on there.
If the wheel is round, let it roll.

This. There's nothing wrong with using irons on a 10/22 at 100 yards. It's actually very good practice to do so.

If you're dead-set on lenses, though, then for $50, you're looking at a made-in-China BSA or Tasco or similar. That actually may be OK for a .22LR's recoil, but I put a Simmons Whitetail Classic 3-9x40-something (Philippine-made) on my 10/22, and it's a good scope. Wasn't too expensive as I recall. I know that Simmons has brought that line back, but I don't know where these newer ones are made or what their quality is like.

Why not just use the irons? Every 10/22 I've ever seen came from the factory with pretty decent irons on 'em.
