I had a Leupold 1.25-4 VX-R patrol on my AR before upgrading to an ACOG. Amazing scope and could hit steel all day long at 3-500 yards. It was a good magnification range for most things you’d do with an AR. Vortex is nice also but I’d go with the Leupold over it. Just my opinion.

Used NF NXS 1-4 will run you under 1k, big fan of the one I owned for a while.

I got a nikon M 1-4 on clearance on Natchezss. there are lots of choices out there.
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I don't know what OP's interest is in a 4x scope for an AR, but these days, people into retro-rifles may want to emulate the 4x power carry handle scopes Colt supplied during the early AR/M16 days. The real Colt 4x scopes from back then fetch a high price, but there are reproduction makers that can supply the 4x scopes for the early AR /M16 retro-rifle revival. Brownell's is not only is offering retro AR rifles , but also retro AR 4x scopes:

Discover rifle scopes for hunting, tactical, and long-range shooting at Brownells. Top brands like VORTEX OPTICS, TRIJICON, and LEUPOLD ensure precision in all conditions. Save Up To 59% Off on premium optics.

Those are really nice... nice reticle unlike the P-series IMHO, and really nice clear glass, and better turrets than anything else I have that's this cheap... BURRIS RT-6, Strike Eagles, PA 1-6, etc...

If they confirmed they were actually Japanese, preferably HAKKO, they would be worth the $300... otherwise I'd find a Colt/Hakko for $300-$400

OK, I just watched the VIDEO on Brownell's page where they say they sourced it from the original manufacturer in Japan... meaning HAKKO. Nice. Modern materials, better glass than the originals.

For OP... if you don't have a permanent carry handle (that'd be rare) that new NIKON M-Tactical 1-4 would be the choice that made sense... probably around the same price if you shop smart and will actually mount on your rail. A carry handle mount would be worthless.

$249 at Cabelas... I think I got mine for around $180 with discounts - that's a lot of scope for under $200 IMHO

I checked the order on the account... it was on sale for $219 and I used a 10% discount code and $63 in rewards so it was about.... $137 after AJ rebate. Best $137 scope I have.

I guess if there is a con or cost savings to the NIKON it would be no illumination. I don't particularly care because of the great turrets and great glass... loved my RT-6 till I figured out the turrets suck (feel cheap and also had to get one fixed under warranty). Nikon M glass is great. I'd rather not have complication of illumination if it isn't daybright anyway. Who cares to see a light pink horseshoe or whatever from a PA or Strike Eagle? I love the bright dot on my PSTII 1-6... that's another good one for you too. Vortex Viper PSTII. I dunno why more budget scopes don't have a simple BRIGHT dot rather than a dim pink reticle.

Maybe the OP doesn't see a need for anything over 4x and doesn't want the added weight that comes with higher magnification?

That 1-6x Vortex is 17.6 ounces. The 1-6x Primary Armes is 16.9 ounces. My Leupold VX Freedom 1.5-4x20 is 9.6 ounces.

For what it's worth that's off of Leupold's page, I've never weighed it.

I never weighed my Nikon 1-4 either - 16.4 was off the Nikon page, haha.

Yeah I checked that Leupold and had to convert the grams to ounces.

My Leupold 3-9 is one of my lightest scopes.

Burris with the Ballistic CQ Reticle.

I ran this on my 3 Gun rifle until the 1.5-6X came out. I really like the dot reticle. The dots are so much easier than hash marks to pick up and focus on when shooting on the clock. You sight in at 100 yards and with ammo calibrated to the reticle it hits dead on at each dot. I've had great success with it and the 1.5-6X out to 500 yards.
