    Picatinny mount question

I just bought a scope mount for my AR and this is the first Picatinny rail system I have used. The mount is long enough that it has two cross pins to hold the clamping nuts. One of the pins is rounded on the bottom to engage with the rail slot and the other is flat and does not really engage with the slot at all. Neither pin rotates or moves in any way. Is this correct or should I be expecting something else?

isn't it just clamping on the sides? some don't actually interface on the slots themselves, but I'm unsure how that affects stability.

The rounded one definitely fits into a slot. Even before clamping the side clamp it seems to restrict forward and back movement to about 1/32 of an inch or so.

As long as you butt it forward towards the muzzle, it shouldn't matter.

It looks sheared off, though. Maybe casting marks? Can't really say for sure without seeing it in the flesh. What brand mount is that?

The brand is Osprey Global. It's not sheared off, at least not since any finish was applied because the finish is fine. It may be a casting mark on the cross pin.

That is weird looking and I’ve never seen anything like it. I’d want both cross pins to engage the slots, and all of the AR mounts I’ve ever seen do.

Thanks for the info. With mounts like this, are the cross pins usually fixed in place or are they rotatable or removable? Mine don't budge in any direction.

OP, what's the size of the mount meant to hold the main tube?

The cheap Made In China PEPR-clones are all made the same way & have the front crossbolt sheared off like that. I have a $20 set from Ebay & it looks identical. They're probably all made in the same factory with just different brands stamped on them. Having condemned them though, I think the cheap ones actually work ok, depending on your application. It's just that the pricier ones are a bit better.

Here's the underside of a Warne mount, I think the rectangular crossbolts lock in place better.

                    Kwikvette:

The mount is for a 30MM tube and comes with a set of inserts to allow it to be used on a 1" tube. My tube is 30mm.

This was a cheap mount, $25. The Warne is much more like I was expecting to see. I should have opened it and inspected it more thoroughly before I purchased it at the gun show.

                      Disregard then.

Was going to say I've got a Leupold MK2 IMS mount with your name on it; had to dig it out since I haven't used it in over 2 years only to find out it's for a 1" tube.

Now I know why it's unused. I've got a Leupold VX3 that I've mounted but never used

It's a $25 mount. If they made it with lugs that actually engaged the rails, then the mount would have to be constructed to some basic mil-spec standards and often times people using $25 mounts are putting them on rails that are completely out of whack. To combat this, they made what you have in your hand...a truly universal mount.

Even this freebie mount that Brownells included with a <$150 scope has legitimate lugs. These days there is a distinct difference between inexpensive Chinese goods and disposable/junk Chinese goods.

I will certainly try it. Actually, I bought it as a bit of a throw-away anyway. Since this is my first AR, I have no idea what I will eventually want to settle on for length of pull, scope height, eye relief, etc. I was originally looking for a cheap set of 30MM rings just to hold the scope while I played with all the variables so I could then decide what characteristics I really wanted for my mount. When I saw the cheapest rings I could find were $20, and this was $25, I figured I would just try this instead. It will certainly serve this original purpose and may be all I need.
