I am very new to guns and I want to get my first gun, a remington 700p, with a aics stock in the future when i get enough money. So to go along with it, I want to get a good scope that will last me a long time. I have been looking at nightforce scopes but i dont know which to get, the nxe or the br models. I have read the differences but they dont seem too much different except the br models are $400+ less and the BR models seem better anyways. What is the advantage of nxe over br? I am on somewhat on a budget but if the nxe models are that much better, then i will work extra hard and save up for one. Also, do the br models have any zero stop feature like the nxe models?

+1 for Mike. A buddy of mine just got a .30-06 Remington 700 for hunting and was looking for a scope to use on that as well as a future precision rifle build. I suggested he contact Mike, who patiently answered his questions and made sure my buddy understood that as a CA resident he'd have to pay sales tax. My buddy ended up with an awesome 3.5-15X 50mm NXS mil-dot/mil turret scope that he's very happy with.Comment

Are you the mike they are talking about?
Im not sure how far im going to shoot, maybe between 200 and 600 yards, im not very sure though.
I want a scope that is good for benchrest shooting and also hunting.
What do you mean that the nxs has more internal adjustments?
What do you prefer, MOA or MIL reticle? I have been looking at the two and it looks like MOA is easier to use and calculate, but i would also like your input.Comment

Sorry.. I'm not the Mike at CS Gunworks.
I have a 5.5-22x56 NXS on my FN SPR and it is very nice. Benchrest scopes are usually a bit heavier. I wouldn't take my SPR with the NXS for hunting. It is way too heavy.
The internal adjustments give you more clicks to move the reticle so you can shoot further. I understand MOA, so that's what I have.======Comment

Okay so I think Im going to get an MOA scope. Does the nightforce scopes usually come with MOA knobs for windage and elevation or are they mil knobs?
What MOA reticle would you recommend for an MOA scope?
Do the benchrest models feature a zero stop for the elevation and wind?Comment

I believe most of the time, a Nightforce is going to come with 1/4-MOA knobs unless you specifically order the mil knobs. Personally, I like the NP-R2 reticle if I was going to go with a MOA reticle.Okay so I think Im going to get an MOA scope. You know, if you're just going to be benchrest shooting and hunting at under 600 yards, you might want to consider a less expensive option. One thing that comes to mind is the Millett TRS (4-16X 50mm). Seems like they've been listening and offer quite a few of the features that have been requested on different boards (mil knobs being one of them, in order to match their proprietary mil-bar reticle which I'm not that familiar with). Or talk to Scott at Liberty Optics or Mike at CSGunworks and get their recommendations; both have extensive knowledge of good glass that won't run over $2000 like my buddy's new Nightforce.
Another thing: While a benchrest rig looks all sexy with a big scopes, you will NOT want to carry that same setup all day in the field while hunting, especially if you're at altitude (think CO elk hunting). There's a reason why simple, light 3-9X 40mm scopes are so popular on big-game hunting rifles and why so many of those rifles have slender barrels: lack of weight. It's going to be very hard to find one scope that will comply with two extremely divergent requirements; you may need to buy two separate rifle/scope combinations, depending on the type of huntiing you're going to be doing.Comment

yeah I was looking at the NP-R2 or the NP-R1 reticle with the MOA knobs. The thing is that if I get really into long range shooting, like maybe near 1000 yards, I dont want to buy a better scope if I buy a cheap scope now and waste money so I might as well start at a high price but maybe I need to get 2 scopes.
What are some good scope rings? I heard Seekins is good.
How often do companies, like nightforce, design new scopes, every year or every other year...?Last edited by Jonlow209; 02-24-2009, 7:22 AM.Comment
