Need help leveling my scope

Hi all,

Just got a new scope for mr AR. Mounting it to a larue QD mount. I do not have a gun vise to get my rifle level, nor do I have any means of getting the scope perfectly level.

Looking for some tips on how to get the sucker level and install the scope correctly. Im in San Jose, and if anyone would be willing to show me how, or has the equipment and would be willing to help, that would be greatly appreciated, and I would compensate for the help too.

In a pinch you can at least get close by resting the rifle somewhere, getting it as level as you can(using a construction level if need be) and then finding a fixed horizontal line in the distance and matching your horizontal crosshair to it. That will at least get you going until you can do it right. Otherwise you can take it to a gunsmith(probably even a gun store or range if you call and ask) and they can do it for a few bucks.

So the problem I ran into is this. I bought the scope at Basspro, and normally, they will mount, level and bore-sight the scope for you, for free. But, since its an AR, they cant touch it until they get a dangerous weapons permit. Apparently the SJ store doesn't have one yet. So I am wondering if the other local shops will run into this problem as well.

Can you not just give them the upper ? tell them it's featureless.

Bring in the upper - easy

It's surprising how level the eye can be on optics


Mount the scope
Leave rings a litt bit lols to slide the scope forward and backward for eye relief


Get it where it looks correct

Tighten rings

They wont take an upper either. Even if i told them it was featureless. Tried all those avenues. Nothing worked.

On some mounts you can use a square from the bottom of mount to a flat side on turret.

Playing cards or feeler gauges from an auto parts store. Done.

A piece of string, a nut, and a thumbtack...or a piece of tape if you prefer.

Use a feeler gauge. Stick it in between the scope and the flat side of your scope mount. Adjust the feeler gauge until its a tight fit on both sides and even then torque down your rings then remove feeler gauge. Tip putting a little lube on both sides of the feeler gauge will make it easier to remove and prevent scratching.

How does the feeler gauge help me determine level? I'm sorry if thats a stupid question, but im trying to envision this in my head. Do you have a picture or link to show me the method you are describing?
