An eotech at 90 degrees will not have thermal shift issues and it will not" drift outside of that (made up) acceptable tolerance." All I was trying to say that it is not as extreme as people are making it sound. If you still want to trade in your eotech, go ahead, I don't really care! I just though I would offer some info to people who are on the edge or people who like their eotech better than the other options and are not quite sure if they should do a trade in or not.
LOL What?! Of course there is. Do you think the military will accept a red dot or holo sight that will drift 8 MOA over 5 MOA with regularity when it gets hot or cold?

I love my Aimpoint PRO. I just switched the QRP2 base mount with the midwest industries quick release base mount. Love it.

I originally bought my EOTech 512 for my Springfield SAR-8, but I sold the rifle. I tried putting it on my AR, but it looked like somebody parked a UPS truck up there, so I put it on my Mini-14. It was a bit more tolerable on the Mini-14, but I wanted something smaller, so I sent it in for the refund since I hardly use it anyway. I am considering putting a smaller reflex sight on this rifle and found this deal at GG&G for their mount with a Burris Fastfire III 3 MOA dot sight for $272. Has anybody had experience with this sight on a rifle?

Got my EOTech refund last week, now I need advice on a replacement for my hunting rifle. I really want/need a red dot.

Rifle is a Browning BAR in .308. Mostly mule deer at ranges from 50-150 yards, primarily in the closer end of that. But, i also use it for elk, and every once in a while a bear or a cougar will show up. From a bench rest, on a nice 70 F day, I could sometimes hold 1.5 moa with the EOTech 512, which is the sum of rifle error, sight error and shooter error, so a decent sight is worthwhile.

Requirements are wide Field of View, and must be very fast sight. About half the shots are standing, and half are running where someone else will spook an animal and he will run past at full tilt. Just getting one of those runners in the field of view of a scope is a challenge. Before I got the EOTech, there were several I could not get the scope on and never got a shot off.

The EOTech was perfect, but the thermal drift issue seemed like a killer. OTOH, the reality is that temperatures are in the 30 F to 70 F range for hunting.

Elk season might get down to 20 F, and every once in a while the rifle gets left in the truck overnight in camp, and might cold soak at 15 F overnight, although I can be more careful to bring it inside.

Price is not a killer. Of course lower is better, but I don't have that many hunting seasons left in me and I would rather enjoy them than be fighting a bad sight.

What is the FOV of the Leopold LCO? Has anyone tested it for thermal drift, or is it an unknown.

Has EOTech improved their sights at all, or are they the same as ever?

I am halfway tempted to just get an EOTech 518 and say the thermal extremes the sight will see are not going to be that bad.

Where would I have to go to find some of the higher end alternatives in stock so I can look through them and see for myself what the FOV is? I am in southern Oregon, and the local stores do not stock higher end optics.

I've requested thermal drift testing results from Leupold so will post them if/when I have some more information.

If you are thinking about buying another EOTech, I would wait until later this year to see if their newer model being tested by SOCOM will be released.

Oooooh, a newer model, eh? Any sources on that? Sounds intriguing.

No public specifics yet. Just stuff I heard from DOD social circles. It was also briefly mentioned in the WaPo article:

"According to Allen, SOCOM is evaluating other sights, including a potentially improved version of the EOTech for a long-term replacement for SOCOM’s close-combat sight requirements. Semelroth said the Marine Corps is conducting a similar search and running “a series of tests on its EOTech inventory to confirm performance meets or exceeds the equipment requirement.”

So wait to see if anything comes of it.
