Calling the kettle black. This is a thread about laser boresighters not manual bore sighting. The op asked about laser boresighters not for a lesson on different methods. If you go and start a thread about eyeballing through your bore, I will not intrude and pose a laser boresighters as the superior method.

And people simply posted an alternate method explaining that it could be done without buying a laser if the OP chose to do so. Yet for some unknown reason every time this comes up(almost anyway, certainly seems like it's every time), people get butthurt about it and post nonsense like telling people they need a vise or something else equally silly(like talking about rounds required to zero, which isn't even the same subject).Calling the kettle black. edit: And BTW, the problem with posting complete nonsense is that it makes it sound like you really have no idea what you're talking about. Turns out you do based on reply #40, so what's the need for the nonsense?Last edited by Merc1138; 08-08-2015, 10:26 PM.Comment

Confused as to why you'd need a vise. I just bore-sighted the new ACOG on my AR by resting it on my shooting bag, keeping it in place with a pair of shotshell boxes, and setting my POA about 2" above a point on the wall 7 yards away. I know that it's not going to be a perfect zero, but I also know that I'm probably going to be off by only a few inches at 100 yards when I head out to the range in the morning to check it. Only thing that made the laser better than doing it the traditional way is that I didn't have to risk spilling my beer while looking down the bore.Comment

Wrong. People came in to bash laser boresighters and posed the use of them as an inferior method. Regardless, the OP asked a specific question that you and others never intended to answer. Like I said, post without the BS and maybe people will take you seriously. I initially posted in the thread wondering why someone stating to use a laser, claimed you need to repeatedly remove the BCG if doing it by eye, and they never answered(probably because they didn't have a reason for posting that in the first place), not to "bash" anything.Wrong. You don't need a vise but the use of a vise or cradle is better. I can "boresight" just by looking along side the barrel and be on paper as well. The laser is useful if you want to do it at the range at your intended zero. I can set my laser at a 50 yard target and get really really close to zero.Confused as to why you'd need a vise. Is using a vise or cradle wrong? Your argument is circular and has no reason or logic. I would use a vise or cradle using a manual method at the shooting range, what is wrong with that?Like I said, post without the BS and maybe people will take you seriously. Did I say it was wrong? Nope. You seem to be forgetting that you're the one who asked how to do it using your eye without a vise.
Here you are mentioning a vise. Nothing particularly wrong with that.
Here I am asking why you'd need to set the upper in a vise.
And instead of just stating to keep it still rather than using some improvised rest, your response was...
So you responded to my question with another question, and then complained about me answering it. That's... odd. If you're going to claim that someone is using circular logic, at least make sure you're aware of who even began the conversation going in that direction in the first place. This entire bit about rests that you seem to be complaining about, is because you asked.Last edited by Merc1138; 08-08-2015, 10:41 PM.Comment

The last question was rhetorical. If you ever meet me in person, I will buy you a beer, share a few stories with you, and you probably would no longer question my ability or understanding of an AR platform weapon. Maybe I have ham hands but it would be impossible for me not to shift my upper without it being secured.Did I say it was wrong? Nope. Boresighting any bore at any distance is easy.
The distance doesn't make any difference as long as you can see your POA. Why is this concept so hard for some to understand? In fact, it is better to use something very far away as a POA when boresighting. It is not unusual to use a mountain peak miles away, the moon or even a star.
I have boresighted uppers just sitting alone on a table. I don't see the need for a vice or any other crap as long as you can keep the bore stable. If YOU need a vice and to boresight at 25 feet, that's fine but, most of us sure don't need that.Last edited by CSACANNONEER; 08-09-2015, 6:59 AM.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

I mount optics and bore sight as part of my job. Today was an average day- mounted three red dots and eight scopes.
I use an old arbor bore sighter, a laser boresighter that inserts in to the muzzle, a laser bore sighter with a very strong magnet that attaches to the end of the barrel and the old fashioned way.
What I state is my opinion, I could be wrong:
All bore sighting is supposed to do is get your first shot on paper at 25 yards, then you start the process of sighting in.
The original method of taking the bolt out and looking through the barrel works great, with some firearms is the only way possible to bore sight. Laser and arbor bore sighters are just an easier more expedient method than the original but they are not better.
I have found with firearms and optics that there is quite often more than correct way to accomplish something, bore sighting being a classic example.
Bore sighting and sighting in are not the same thing, bore sighting is nothing but the first step in the sighting in process.
It normally takes me around six shots to get a rifle sighted in at 100 yards, one shot at 25 and 5 shots at 100. To most people I know six shots is outstanding so kudos to the poster that sights in at 1000 yards with a couple of shots, you are a savant, don't expect us mere mortals to match your expertise.
Though I use it the least, if only had one bore sighting devise it would this one:

I wonder if Sarah Palin used to bore sight her rifle by looking at russia from her house
I like to use Jupiter on a dark night sipping champagne
I always just boresight at 25 yrds, take 1 shot then adjust for the second shot which gets it on center then move out to 100 yards for 2 or 3 more shots to fine tune.Last edited by stand125; 08-15-2015, 8:05 PM.CALGUNS DICTIONARY "FLIER": when a shooter wants to turn a 1 inch group to a half inch group because he flinched.Comment

^^^ wait, wut?...
Look down a barrel to 100 yards and you're set...
If you have doubt, send a round and identify the dirt puff off the hillside backstop...
If you arent able to decipher the difference from target to hillside dirt puff, you don't know what you are doing - because a real shooter could line up crosshair to dirt puff (since the rifle was perfectly steady and dirt berm distance is a non factor)... And be zerod in the next shot. Duh.
I know it seems illogical - but if you know what you are doing its common sense.
^^^ all sarcasm (for those that don't get the CSACANNONEER training method

On thing that you can do if you are novice at this matter and want to avoid a laser or broken target frames all together is use to use a reverse method. I still commonly do this. Rather than shooting at 25, 50, 100, etc., I will shoot at 500 or 600, then zero my shot according to the splash in the reticle. Then, from 600, I dial down 3-5 Mil, depending on the cartridge, then your next shot is on paper every time. That requires an extra shot, but you don't need to look down the bore as carefully or use any laser devices, just one sighter at a known distance is all you need to adjust to paper.
Anyway, that's another method I do sometimes when I want it done quickly and have a appropriate backstock in the distance. It's one extra shot, but no biggy.Comment
