    Laser Bore Sight

    Hey guys and gals,

I want to get a "laser bore sighter" for my rifles. What good to buy?

    What type of rifle?

I have one and never use it.... Its a lot easier to bore sight it by actually looking down the bore, it also produces better results.

^^^ This. Save your money and bore sight. Spend it on some extra ammo.
There are no great men. Just great challenges which ordinary men, out of necessity, are forced by circumstance to meet.

        ExtremeX,

I have an AR-15 and had dismal results this past weekend at the range table.
Also need one for my red dot to sight in too.

-remove the upper from the lower
-pull the BCG out of the rifle
-put the upper receiver on a rest
-look though barrel and aim at the center of the target while looking though bore
          -hold it steady
-move the RDS onto the center of that target
-check, confirm, and fine tune as needed.

Tip: Its easier to do this at a closer distance like 50 yards. Once you get your shots on paper you can fine tune at whatever distance you want.

Note: Bore sighting devices don't do a better job than the above method, they have a lot of slop and POA constantly changes at it wiggles or rotates. The ones that go into the chamber are better but you cant beat using the above method.

A laser boresighter is a tool for those who do not know how to boresight. they are a waste of money period. Well, if you have a cat, they can be fun but, that's it. Even if you can't boresight, it only takes ONE round to zero optics at any distance.

Thank you all for your postings. To remedy my issue I'm gonna try one of those cartridge type laser bore sighters. Maybe it's a waste butperhaps not in my case. Time will tell.

Instead of wasting your money on something that may or may not be true with the muzzle (normally chambers are not perfectly true to the muzzle and cheap cartridge type laser pointers aren't perfect either), pull the bolt and use your eye to sight down the bore. Point the bore at an object in the distance and adjust the optics to point at the same object. Then, even if you use a pos laser boresighter, don't forget to adjust for distance. After that, just do a one shot zero at the distance you want your optics zeroed for.

                  OP

I have the OPMOD GUMB, and it works "pretty good". It certainly works better than my previous laser boresight, which was one of those universal ones that you plug into the muzzle end. The universal ones I find are somewhat skewed, mostly because they rely on plastic caliber screw-in plugs that are not precise. Way too much play. With the GUMB, at least I find that I get on paper at 50 yards. The other universal one I find it's luck dependent.

While the other guys are probably right that you may save some $ by just removing your BCG, and looking down the bore, it's not always convenient to do that, and it sure as heck takes a lot of time to keep taking the bolt in and out.

Why would you repeatedly remove the BCG? Do it once while bore sighting it, then put it back.

Saves ammo and it is enough to get me on paper with little work

It takes me less time to R&R a bolt than to deal with an unnecessary tool which I may or may not have handy. Without pulling the bolt or using any sort of crutch, it still only takes one shot to properly zero optics so, why waste money on something that isn't needed and doesn't save ammo?

Laser bore sights can be super helpful and guys can bravado crap on them all they want, but if you buy a good one that can handle all of your calibers, it is worth the money IMHO. I have one from Cabelas and I can go down to 22lr and manage all of my weapons and I have found it super helpful, useful, and they do work. I have used on pistol and rifle; red dot and scope and BUIS.

Why anyone else would possibly care if the guy wants to spend $30 on a useful tool is beyond me. Great, if YOU can get on paper in 1 shot with your method, fine. This is just another method and for some, including myself, I can sit in the comfort of my home/yard and use one of these to sight in a new product and save time and effort when at the range. I know... I have done it.

You can sit in your home or yard and use your eye to boresight better and easier than using an extra tool. OK, I don't know if YOU can but, most people can.

Edit: No bravado crap. I'm posting this so that people will understand how to do it properly without wasting time and money for useless crap that does a lesser job than doing it the right way.

I can zero at home and save the range cost and ammo. I did the primary arm red dot on my AR15 and it was good to go for next range trip. I tested at 25 yards and I was on center mass no problem.
