I don't think it's cost effective for a Sentry 10 gun safe. I only have heard of burglars taking the gun safes, not opening their locks.

I'm just saying that your safe's weak link is not the lock, but the door.

My friend got home to his Sentry safe being pried open by two burglars. They managed to pry a gap on the door that you can see the guns, but not enough for the finger to enter. The police think it took them 20 minutes. I think it will take another 20 minutes to get the gap wide enough for a handgun.

You should call Sentry to ask them how will your lock standup to a brute force attack. I am suspecting the bolts will not open even if you knock off the combo dial and handle.

Combination lock replacement

Ken, you mentioned that the best upgrade to do to a Sentry 10 gun safe is to replace the cheapo Chinese lock with a better model. I remember that it has to be a standard size, but don't remember which ones you recommend. Can you link me to some of the better aftermarket safe locks?

Why are you replacing the lock?

If you can afford them, the Sargeant & Greenleaf R6730 (not the 6700 series or R6741) is the best, most reliable mechanical lock and the GlobaLoks ULIX is hands-down the best, most reliable electronic lock.

BTW: The most popular mechanical lock is the LA GARD 3330 and the most popular electronic lock is the LA GARD SafeGard swingbolt. That is for any safe, not just gun safes or cheaper safes. All the electronic locks that represent are UL Type 1 rated.

I'd be replacing the lock because when I spoke to you on the phone you suggested it was the best upgrade to make on a Sentry .

I couldn't remember the brands you'd recommended or whether there were any good electronic locks you recommended and have always sorta leaned towards mechanical locks anyway. What's the best "bang for the buck" mechanical or e-lock available that you would recommend?

Bang for the buck? What's your budget for your bang? If you can do the install, the typical economy grade mechanical runs about $150 and the economy e-lock around $200.

Better basic e-locks and mechanicals usually run 50-100% higher. Again, quantity talks louder!

Main thing to look for is maximum reliability since the opposite costs money on the other end.
