Safe lock, mechanical or electronic?

I replaced a failing electronic with an electronic/dial unit. It used both methods. If battery was dead just use the dial.#NotMyPresident

I have both. I prefer the dial to the electronic lock.
WHY?
Batteries die.
Put in your code and you hear the double beep and it doesn't open. Dead Battery.10/15/2022 - Called to get on the list

I can't comment on the X-10, they came out after I retired. At work we replaced S&G mechanical with the X-08, which in turn were replaced with X-09, all in the search for increased security. I never had an issue with the mechanical, did have problems with both the X-08 and X-09. The good thing about those electronic was that they did not rely on batteries, spinning the dial charged up a capacitor to run things. Neat locks, probably better security than the mechanical but the price of them will exceed what many are willing to spend on a safe.
I have mechanical on my safe and on my "quick access" box by the bed. I had electronic quick access by the bed, it eventually failed.Send Lawyers, Guns and Money - On second thought, hold the Lawyers.Comment

I only go for mechanical, never even thought of electric. I would hate a dead battery when i need to get in. I even prefer no backup keys because thieves will know where you hid the backup keys, they seem to know all the good spots. Although I think they all come with keys now, i gave my keys to my daughter to keep at her house. Although they called them a day key, so I have no idea what they do. I have 4 different gun storage devices, from my truck, to garage to house and all mechanical.Last edited by mikeyr; 09-21-2022, 12:06 PM.sigpic

My buddy has a nice Liberty safe with a mechanical lock. He's lazy, and we are all lazy from time to time, and he tells me he frequently doesn't lock it because then he's gotta enter the combo again.Comment

I have a little olight flashlight held by magnets pointing down at the lock. A quick twist lights up the dial and I can read it without glasses.Again, a vote for 'personal preference'.
I have not-so-good eyes and not so good hand steadiness, so mechanical is a real problem for me - hard to see a dial and hard to stop precisely on the numbers for me.
