Amsec Safe Question

I'm looking for some advice on this safe. Trying to figure out if it's a good deal or if I should keep looking or save up for a little longer and just buy new. I've asked if there's any indication of model numbers or anything and was told he couldn't find any. He's asking $500 for the safe. What say the CalGuns experts?

Does this matter if I'm no longer in California? This will be a replacing a safe I gave to my sister when I left California last month. That safe was nothing special but it was reasonably priced and better than no safe at all. I'm not 100% sold on this one but I know Amsec safes are well known and it seems like a good deal for an Amsec safe from the little bit of looking around I've done.

That's a pretty old model, similar to an AMSEC CSC line box. Looks like 1" bolts. Pics I could find don't have the model number in the associated web page.

Probably an RSC (Residential Security Container, 5 minutes burglary resistance - I just learned there is an "RSCII", 10 minutes resistance. "Real" safes start at TL-15, 15 minutes of burglary resistance. ) Most gun safes are RSC or equivalent.

I don't have the slightest idea. I've been told "it took 4 guys to get it down into the basement and he'd guess probably somewhere around 600 lbs." Thank you for the information. My old safe 100% was just an RSC so replacing it with another one would get the job done for now. I'm really just trying to figure out if for that price range I should buy new or jump on this. I've done some online searching and found a decent deal at Dicks but refuse to give them any money. Looking for some guidance on the issue is all really.

It's not a bad price, but you might be better off buying new.

Safes like most things have improved over the years. Keep in mind that most gun safes will help keep the kid's mitts off the guns and just somewhat slow down a thief....back up your safe with replacement value insurance.

And moving a safe.... it's mainly technique and equipment.... without the right technique and equipment, moving a safe can be a real pain and possibly dangerous.

Good for you for resisting buying from Dicks

What's the fire rating? If less than 30 minutes, I'd pass or only buy that safe for storage of less valuable guns and magazines. Even then I'd only buy it for $300 or less.

I would pass on that safe, looks old and crappy! I would wait and buy a new AMSEC! I personally have 3 of them and love em!!!!!!!!! The customer service for AMSEC is awesome too. If you have questions about em just PM me.

That safe looks like mine, exactly. It weighs about 400 pounds. I moved it myself with a dolly and a pickup truck. Twice. But I was a lot younger and stronger then.

I've since changed out a lot of the interior to increase the capacity.

I bought mine around 1990, it was a bit over $500 then. Not sure what that means as far as the current value. Except, if I decide to sell mine when I move, I would be very thrilled to get $500 for it.

The fact that it has holes for barrels and not an open shelf with notches would make me pass
