Here is one for all you C&R guru's. Saw a Mauser Style Bolt action on the front page of today's Wall Street Journal. Anybody have an idea of what it actually is. It is being held by a rebel in the mid east. Looks like an old war horse.

Might be able to see it from that link. Is that what you were asking about? Looks like a pre-WWII Mauser, the standard service rifle in numerous countries in the middle east prior to the adoption of semi-autos.
LR Mauser, flat butt plate, straight bolt handle, solid wood stock. No stock donut (bolt take-down disc) or marking disk. The only thing throwing me is what looks like odd rear sight ears.
Could be a Turk, a Czech 98/22 (sold to Turkey) or 98/29 (sold to Persia) or something else. Could be the rear sight is the Lange-Vizier (rollercoaster) on a Gew 98 - some of those ended up in Turkey. With all the other guys with AK's, maybe he's the squad designated marksman?

IMHO it is a GEW98. Here is mine for comparison:http://www.wsj.com/articles/rebels-b...ace-1421650439

Look close below the receiver rail.
You can see a two vertical lines, one at the rear of it, and one in front. When I blew up the pic, the lines are metal, and look like they're attached to the receiver. Almost like some kind of takedown rifle.Comment

Thanks for the efforts. Not sure on being the unit designated marksman with those sights. I wonder where is getting the ammo for it? The Knives also caught my attention. Those guys look serious about having their voice heard.
Based on the article, having arms of some type gives teeth to the idea of having your vote count.Comment

Based on the above comments, looks like that Mauser has been in the Middle East since the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Now it maybe in the presidential palace.Comment
