Just my 2 cents worth here, and I know nothing of Arisaka values, but reading the thread made me curious. Looking at Gunbroker "completed items" with a search of "Arisaka 44" shows sold items values from a few hundred to over fifteen hundred dollars. Also a whole bunch with starts in the $800 range that no one bit on. The ones that sold high all seem to have similar photos of specific spots on the guns, mostly showing numbers. If I was going to sell one I would mimic those listings and hope for the best. You can always include a reserve if there is a number you won't sell the gun below. As for the condition of the Mum, don't worry about the description, just include a good close shot like the one you put in here. Anyone interested in paying collector value for the gun is going to know what they are looking at.

Again, just my 2 cents worth. Good luck to you.

Type 44 carbine, 'type 1' bayonet mount, lightly struck mum, I'd ask $900, and let them deal you down to $750-700, depending how bad you want to sell it.

I have a T99 with the same marks, word is that they are battlefield surrender rifles and they only had bayonets to deface mums, typically two bayonets, one blade to mum and other back of blade to back of blade whacker.

I guess you could call it a "Catastrophic" defacement.

The type 99 i have has the mum ground down. Somebody whacked it real hard against a tree or something hard enough to take a chunk out of the for end of the stock and 1/4 of the hand guard is missing. I doubt it could be damaged this bad in handling. My guess is when they surrendered the rifle somebody beat the hell out of it. Lucky the wood took the brunt of the impact and the barrel is fine. Anybody else have info about defacing of these rifles after the war ended.

I guess I'll just ask $700. Thanks for all the info guys. I'll get a for sale ad up in the collectors forum.

Updated with all of the serial numbers I could find without removing it from the stock. Any insight? its obviously not a matching rifle. Was this common for rifles used in action during WWII? Just wondering if my co-worker's story of his uncle bringing it back holds any water.

When soldiers were boading ships to go back home they had to dump bolts in a pallet box, when they got to shore they picked out a bolt and scrambled with ship mates to find correct bolts which was almost never.

Those lucky enough to ship home complete or stuff in a duffy bag (or "Duffle cut") were mostly matching.

                      Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

I wonder what happened to the stock. It seems equally distressed all around it.
