How on earth did that happen? My cousin has one he has been shooting for years with out a hitch. Could it have been like that when you bought it? What kind of ammo were you using? Good luck and post your results.

I am not sure, it's possible the extractor was in a somewhat damaged state when I received it, I didn't really take a good look at what it was like before I fired three rounds at the range, but they extracted just fine. I wasn't force loading it from the chamber and forcing the extractor to snap over the rim, in all cases with rounds loaded, it was loaded from the magazine so the rim would slip underneath the extractor as the bolt was pushed into battery.

When repaired be sure the extractor slot is cleaned out well. I will never shoot mine but I will now clean the gunk out.

        Again good luck.

Syntax, You have to lift the end and tap it back?
When you get it off, post a pic of it. A guy on GB had a handful of extractors he was trying to ID, close to an Argy 91, but just a bit different. Now I'm thinking they may have been for a Madsen.
I'll search his posts and see if I can find the pic he posted. If not, I can refer you to a couple of smiths that repair the lip, and extend them for cartridge conversions in Mausers.

Thanks for that info, TRAP, I'll try to get the extractor off in one piece.

I managed to get the extractor off. It is held in place from slipping off of the bolt by a tab that goes into a machined out groove in the bolt body:

I guess one of my questions is - which kind of extractor would be closest matching to the cut out on the Madsen that would allow for a bit of filing or fitting to make work? Looking at 1891 extractors, it seems to be a bit too wide and shallow, but the protrusion in the extractor looks like it would be in the right spot to fit.

You won't find anything close to that!
Your best bet is having it repaired.
I spent an hour searching for the post on GB. I think I found it, but the OP deleted his pics from photo bucket that were posted. His user name is gnprts if you want to contact him.

You have to push out the extractor to clear the little notch underneath, and then pull it out carefully. Since your extractor is intact, you'll want to be careful.

Push from the bolt face side?

If you guys have problem with the repair let me know. That part doesn't look too complicated. I could probably machine one for you from scratch. I have a little cnc shop and enjoy working on gun projects every now and then.

Yeah, push out from the bolt face side outwards until the protrusion sticks out from the bolt body and you will be able to pull it out.

Highly appreciated 68Ranchy, if his doesn't work out or perhaps we want to make more than one, I'm sure there are many Madsen owners who would like to have spare extractors, which seems like a delicate part in the design.

I would consider packing it to prevent heat transfer, weld up the broken area by heli-arc and grind/file to shape -
I would not try to reheat treat the part --
I expect even "soft" it will work for years --
I have seen mauser extractors repaired by simply "butt joining" a new claw on with silver solder -- Seem to work fine
                              my tuppence
