Madsen Model 1947 - chipped extractor (now with pictures)

    Hey guys,

I recently picked up a Madsen Model 1947, and managed to shoot it for a few rounds, but it looks like the extractor had chipped away a little and now I probably need a new one, or somehow repair the extractor that I already have.

I was wondering if anyone knows a source of parts for these unique bolt action rifles? I am doubtful of the availability of parts for this gun since only 6,000 were made, but maybe someone knows of something.

Alternatively, how much would something like this cost to custom machine? Maybe if there's enough interest, perhaps a small run could be manufactured if it's not too costly or infeasible, but I've never had a machinist make a part for my personally.

Another idea would possibly be to weld a bead onto the tip of the chipped extractor and file the part to fit again? I am not sure about the durability of this option, nor how this would affect the temper of the part.

    Call the folks at www.libertytreecollectors.com

If my memory serves me right. They know a guy with some parts for that particular weapon.

Conversely, I would guess a smith or welder/machinist could TIG up the broken part and reform it and give it a heat treat.

    Thats my .02 worth.

Thanks for the tip, just gave them an email and they said they haven't seen loose Madsen parts ever.

Anyways, I took some pictures to demonstrate the problem that I have with the extractor - a piece chipped away and as such won't grab onto the rim properly anymore.

I don't think I'll be able to find a reliable source for these parts exactly, perhaps doing a spot TIG weld as Twystd1 suggested and filing to fit would be the next best alternative?

Syntax, I can do TIG at work if you'd like me to work on it . We also have a mill so could possibly mill out the inside part and flush up the top. Someone else would have to heat treat it

Not to thread jack, but my Madsen first time out broke the leaf spring to the rear sight, so now it is able to just flop around. I'd like to locate the spring

Don't have a pic of it

Pics of what extractor should look like. If you can get it out, I'll fix it

And some quick Google searching has yielded NO replacement parts

Yeah, looks like a significant portion of the extractor is missing. If I bring the Madsen by at the shoot this weekend, I can give you the extractor so you can TIG it?

Also, thanks for the reference pics, that's good to have to see how it should look, and since you have an intact part, it will be good to compare the two pieces.

Yup, can do. I plan on being there on Sun

Find out how to remove the extractor. I read that it's very similar to removing a Carcano extractor (not sure which modal though). I will also need to remove mine so I can get some proper dimentions

Not knowing how the metal will react to heat, there is a chance the heat could just ball up the metal and render it totally useless and unsalvageable Let's try to do some research beforehand

The heat could ruin the spring properties, but heat treating MAY fix that

Wonder if you can get an extractor made for 30-06 and we can tool it to fit the Madsen bolt...

In all my years collecting I have never seen any Madsen spare parts.....

I would go with a repair attempt...

Posted a question about spare parts and a guy said to try to modify a Mosin or Mauser extractor

You buy the extractors, I'll work my metalworking magic... maybe

I don't think a Mauser or Mosin extractor would even fit, the Mauser extractor would at least require a lot of machining but I suppose if it's machined enough, it might be able to make fit.

They only made about 5k of the guns; any parts now will only come from guns being broken apart for the pieces. That is going to be a tough fix. Best of luck.

An 1891 extractor may be close enough as a donor piece:

Now the challenge is trying to get the extractor off....I've been trying at it for 30 minutes now and it's not budging. It's definitely held in there with some strong spring power.

There is often a tiny screw lurking hidden by oil/junk etc.

I looked at a madsen in a small shop a while ago and was very tempted. But it was missing a couple parts and I figured I'd NEVER find them so I passed. Kinda glad, although I'd really like to get one of these someday. Hope it all goes well Syntax.
