They can be had for the high side of M44 prices nowadays, expect $275-325 if it's in a real M38 stock. Quite a bit lower if in an M44 stock. I paid $230 for my counterbored 1943 in a beautiful M38 stock a few months ago.

Another really nice carbine to consider if you want to stick with a Russian is a 91/59, they are usually in excellent condition with VG bores. To the untrained eye, they look just like an M38 minus the milled rear sight.

The Polish M44s are beautiful and SVT40's and Bobby's are some pristine examples. I have seen a few at the local gunshows but they always demand a premium.

Does anyone out there have a minty T53? I think that would be even more impressive given the average condition of those things.

I have a T53 for sale right now that is in outstanding condition, but with a mismatch bolt and refinished stock. (Shameless plug)

The Prvi 7.62x54R is good stuff, I picked up some from SGAmmo for about $13/box. It does make it nice not to have to worry about cleaning my M39 right away (not that cleaning corrosive is difficult, I've just gotten lazier).

I have two super nice type 53's. The one below is especially nice. All stamped matching and original. Also no importer marks. I got it from the importer who sold to Navy Arms back in the day...I got it fresh out of a crate of unissued rifles. It still has the "anti-rust" bag clipped under the rear sight.

i like the metal on a nice Chinese T-53. i am not a collector so i do not care for referb Russians myself.

Holy smack, that's a gorgeous T53! Almost as nice as the Polish. I always enjoy seeing the photos, and the stories or how those examples were found gives the rifles a personality of their own.

Any examples of Hungarian or Romanian M44s out there? I have a beater mismatched Hun that is by no means the beauty of the ball. But I don't see many of those out there these days.

Nobody mentioned non import marked versions. I have a M44 like that I'll probably sell it though. Recently I also picked up a M38 no import marks. Another plus is Ina M38 stock. Negatives are so so bore, non matching, arsenal repair on toe of stock and wood appears sanded. Still I've seen very few non import marked M38's. I saw a beat one with a duffle cut stock go $380 on Gunbroker. It was an actual M38 stock though.

I have nice examples of boht the Hungarian and Romanian T-44's.

I just don't have any pic's of them. They are buried at the back of one of my safes. Hopefully when I get my photo studio set up I'll get the time to snap some pic's of them.

I just passed on a $135 Hungarian. In ok shape but had a cheap Chinese scope and a rubber buttpad both were easily reversible. I rarely to never see nice Hungarians or Romanians. So nobody has any non import marked m44's or m38's?
