I have several SKSs. None of them will open the mag latch without major force. That must be one loose SKS.

His videos are usually pretty well edited, I was surprised he not only made a point of announcing the chamber flag every time but also leaving the fumbling around with it in. It killed the mood I guess
I can't tell if he did it because of the slam fire reputation they have or if someone called him out on it and he's trying to make it a normal part of his videos now.Comment

Neat to see a shooting icon enjoying a classic rifle like a sks. Now how about him with a garand.Comment

I don't get chamber flags on an SKS? If you're not firing it, action is left open. I can see that easier than a zip tie from 20 feet.NRA Certified Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor, Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

Thanks for the vid because I really liked it. I needed it to get my sks love going again.
I go back and forth with my sks. Wasn't so into it when I first bought it / shot it and was scratchin my head as to why so many people love the sks. Shot it some more and really, really liked it - I love this gun! Then shot it some more and swung back the other way - it's kinda boring to shoot.
Think I need to go shooting again and get back into the sks.Comment

I am gonna try that loading method this sunday at the C & R shoot. I have a friend that always struggles with stripper clips and if I can load it like this guy, then I will share the method with my buddy.Comment

Hmm.. tried loading it both ways (no stripper clips) and I found no advantage to loading from below. Tried it both standing up, and prone. Since SKS (in its original form) has no pistol grip or long protruding magazine, dropping rounds in from the top is easy enough while prone, without the need to turn rifle over, unlatch the mag, etc..

Yeah, I can't see loading an SKS like that, upside-down. Looks kind of loosey goosey. Seems like you're just asking for jams and FTF's. But hey, HE'S Jerry Miculek... and I'm not.
Also, don't get the OCD chamber flag thing.
I can see the value of chamber flags when the gun is stored or being transported to the range, but no way am I going to mess around with a chamber flag between groups. No F'ing way. Besides, less careful shooters could find themselves doing muzzles sweeps while they try to dig the flag out of their pocket.
I have nothing but respect for Jerry Miculek, but when it comes to loading SKS's, I'm all about stripper clips.
