    Garand build

Well, I finished this build finally. Last piece was the WW2 era sling.
It started as a bare receiver fro the CMP auction. Grade C receiver, which I don't know how....it said has rust under the wood line....there wasn't much at all, only some scattered light pitting.
Springfield #2517, original build date approx. early June 1938. I got a nice 8/41 barrel and GAW stock from Dupage and installed it myself. I went a little crazy building this rifle, buying tools and a lot of early parts. Great folks on the CMP boards, Dupage and ammogarand. I got several pre and early war parts for them, good stuff....
Another interesting thing about the original rifle serial number is that there was an SRS hit! This serial number was recorded for some reason: 2/7/1939 3rd INF Ft Sam Houston...all in all a fun experience. And what makes it even better...I "gave" it to my 13 year old son. It was nice to see him get excited about a piece of history.... It's gonna live in dad's safe till he's 18.

That is so cool! Congrats your way!

        Thanks guys.
The only thing I don't really care for is the finish on the gas cylinder. I only used it because it's a narrow base. I have a wide base that matches the overall finish better.
I got my first garand when I was his age. I still have it, although Shuff turned it into a tanker.

Milled trigger guard. Lockbar rear sight. You really went to the effort. Do you mind telling us final cost (minus tools)?

What a great gift to give your son. Not only is it a piece of history, but it also something you put a lot of effort into building with correct parts. I'm sure he will treasure it.

Awesome job... By the way, you should probably stock up on 30-06 ammo for when your son turns 18. Who knows if 30-06 will be super expensive or super hard to get in 5 years.

heh....well...lets just say I went overboard. The receiver was around $650. Prolly around 4X that. And really, yes that was silly...but I kinda had building it for him in the back of my mind, so it didn't matter to me. I've ordered ammo from CMP several times I the past couple of years. Ammo is worth more than gold.

Sounds like you got an excellent receiver. Saw several in the CMP Store @ $150, that would not make even a good drill rifle. My curiosity is regarding the gas port build... with that early of a SN, might it not have been a gas trap model? I believe SN2540 had a 8-12-38 Ft Sam Houston SRS hit. None the less, your son will enjoy your efforts when his M1 get out of 'jail'. :-) Great work! :-)

I'm sure you're still trolling the forums for more correct parts for your Garand Lot of guys buying and trading. The park looks very nice on your build. CMP is not the only show in town in putting Garand's together. Looks good did you take it out for a test fire?

Interesting on that SRS hit....I wish there was more info. It should have been a gas port. I chose not to go that route due to the fact the kit is $2K. Then I'd have to get all the other gas trap parts(my OCD would dictate that)....that would have been awesome, but then the rifle would stay in MY safe. I'll test fire soon....

I was really happy with the parts I got from ammogarand.com. I would recommend them to anyone looking for any garand parts.

Ok... if PPMman is going to suggest more 'correct' parts for the SN, perhaps you can look for the small hole trigger guard- C46025, concentric rings. But then you just go crazy & start chasing your tail, over the details. :-) As long as it goes 'Blam' eight times with a 'Ping' afterwards, all is good.

I had to draw a line so I wouldn't go nuts trying to be exactly correct! Otherwise I'd be more broke...lol. That ping is all that matters! That and my boy is happy.

I have a Garand receiver that I don't know what to do with. I was thinking about making a .243 Garand for when my daughter grows up but that's going to be a challenge. Yours came out nice though! Congrats!!!
