Is fire season really ever over in So Cal? Lol

Our winters have sucked lately with only a few soaks here and there, it stays fairly dry most of the time

And a temp ban paves the way for permanence

Hopefully there won't be a permanent ban, but if there is a temporary ban it should be lifted once we get some rain. Even at Burro you can shoot steel jacketed or steel core ammo after a rain (you just have to ask the range master) so hopefully they would do the same at WEGC. I just got another 1,000 rounds of Wolf 7.62x39 that is bi-metal jacketed, so it would suck if they put a ban in place. They are the closest place I can shoot it.

The range requires all members to have a full size shovel in their vehicle at all times. I was there one day when a fire broke out on the hill above the range. A bunch of us grabbed our shovels and went to work. For over 45 minutes we all battled the fire and kept putting out hot spots. Then the fire department showed up and finished it off, but the range members get credit for stopping the fire from spreading.
I got to tell you, it was hard work and a little weird fighting those big flames, sometimes over 12 feet high. But everybody worked together and stopped the fire. It could have continued to spread but the range members contained it. You can still see the burned area above the 100 yard berm.
I dont mind a little restriction during the fire season, seems reasonable to me.
Maybe everybody that is concerned should get together and start a reloading club for C & R guys. I am a member of the OC reloading club and have learned lots from them. Reloading is very cheap, and once you are set up and running you can reload for the rest of your life. Face it, someday the surplus stuff will dry up and you will need another option anyway.
A bunch of guys could pool together and share reloading equipment and knowledge. I know Beatle Bailey is very knowledgeable about reloading and maybe he could help?

By the way, I usually make the monthly C & R shoots when I am not traveling, but cant make it this time. I think the monthly shoots are great and I would hate to see them fall apart over an ammo restriction.

Good post Lucky, I will bring both a shovel and a fire extinguisher. Seeings how I am not a member (yet) I did not know that you all were supposed to have them. My fire arms related purchases are over for the year because of Chistmas but my first planned purchase in January will be a reloader. I am down to get a reloading group together.

I do reload, and do have dies for everything I have, but that's about a dozen different calibers, so the ones I can get cheap surplus for, I do. If this becomes a thing, it's really not that big of an imposition for me to load 7.62x54r, as it shares bullets with a few other things I have, just means I have that much more stuff to process and keep track of. While not the end of the world, I've gotta admit it takes away a large part of the attraction. Whatever, we'll cross that particular bridge when we get to it.

AFAIK, the rull only applies to Full Members using the back range,
                  V. Rules for the Back Ranges
                  2. All Annual members are required to have a full sized shovel whenever they are on the range and show it to anyone who asks. A 4 lb. fire extinguisher is also recommended.

but I always try to bring a shovel even when I am only going to be at the Main Range.

Yep...one day my buddy and I were shooting in Bay 06 when he looked up and said, "Dude, we've got fire!"

We both grabbed our shovels & extinguishers and ran downrange. The extinguishers helped, but the shovels saved the day.

BTW: We were shooting brass cased, copper-jacketed, lead core 5.56.

I'll try to bring out the Enfield, trapdoor, and maybe a couple Frenchie guns to shoot (and an AR or two for testing).
The 7.5 is my first attempt at French handloads using a light 308 recipe (since ammo is non existent right now), we'll see how it works out.

I have only shot with the C&R guys once, but I do shoot C&R type guns, shoot the lever action match and 3 gun matches. I was out there today to practice for the upcoming dueling tree match that calguns is having. The C&R shoots are a great idea. I figured I would throw my 2 cents in for what it is worth.

It is quite dry out there, and it does get green after the rain. This drought sucks and it means a shorter wet season.

My thoughts used to be that lead or brass/copper bullets don't make sparks. I was wrong, and I only believed it after I shot a night match and saw my copper jacketed pistol bullets make sparks when the hit the steel plates. That is a lot of energy being transferred at one time, when the bullet hits a steel plate. It is also common for bullets to hit the dirt and bounce 50+ yards down range.

I pretty much only shoot my reloads, and have never bought steel jacketed or AP ammo, so the limits never phased me. The range has decent clearings, but I see the cause for concern as well. Reloading your own makes steel a moot point.

I know that not everyone can reload, but the cost savings is great, especially for rifle ammo, and you get to choose which components to use. Copper plated bullets and cast lead bullets help keep the cost down. Watch out, as some places charge as much or more for lead bullets as they do jacketed. I cast my own lead bullets for rifles, and have bought commercial lead bullets for pistols. My light to mid power 30-30 ammo runs me 7 cents per round, with free lead I picked up out of the dirt. A C&R reloading club would be pretty cool. If you think reloading might be for you, then look into it some more. Boolit casting can be fun and isn't that hard to do, once you learn to do it well. Powder coating boolits is kind of fun and it looks cool.

The NRA is a necessary evil, in my opinion. I hate the advertising they send out and all the calls, but I was able to get my name on their do not contact list. $25 is a drop in the bucket compared to the money I spend on the hobby. The NRA seems to get results and it is not right for me to complain about my right being restricted and not take a little action by being a member. Their views may be slightly different than mine, but they are working towards the same goal as me..........to keep our 2nd Amendment rights. I am a full member of WEGC and it is well worth being an NRA member to be a WEGC member. I would do the same for a partial membership, as the partial members range beats going to any other range in the area, for me. Suck it up do something to help all gun owners. What else would you randomly spend $25 bucks on and not have a second thought about it? Dinner, a movie, a box of ammo?

Full members of WEGC are NRA members, and some of us feel that partial members should also use their option of being an NRA member to help our rights as shooters. The partial members line may work a lot like a public line, but it is part of the private club. The price to shoot at WEGC is a better deal than Raahauges or Lytle Creek Firing line, unless you only go to the range once in a rare while.

Ronin2 can come off a bit abrasive, but he is quite knowledgeable and he is looking out for us. He doesn't have a problem with speaking his opinion and taking action to preserve what we have at WEGC. I am glad he offered to have guests at the board meeting. A large number of WEGC full members have failed to vote in the past. Some people say that we shouldn't go only by the number of votes which are turned in. If a percentage of the entire 1600 person membership was required to get anything done in the club, nothing would ever happen. It seems a lot of people don't care whether changes do or don't happen, because they don't vote either way. The voters get the say so. This is my second year as a member and the first year I can vote, and I will use my vote. My understanding is that club business is bases on votes and/or board members' decisions, and the board members are voted in by club members. The power lies in the hands of club members to decide what happens and who runs the club. Some people have excuses for not getting involved. If you want change, then find a way to participate. I think it is great for the board to hear comments from partial members as well.

I think I got my fill of shooting for the weekend when I was out today and I have matches for the next two weekends, so I don't plan to go to the C&R shoot. I hope it turns out to be a great event. The competitions are open to the public at WEGC, so check them out if you are into that kind of thing. There is a lever action match the 4th Sunday of the month at 8am on the 200 yard pad. It is a nice laid back silhouette match and a C&R lever gun would be right at home. Max distance is only 110 yards.

Good luck with the C&R shoot!
