What Scope Should I use?

For my newly aquired 91/30 I want to use a scout style scope, I have been looking around but want to hear what others are using and d how they like them

what type of mount? I have darrell's scout mount with an ncstar scope which works fine for plinking

darrell's scout mount requires no alterations of the rifle and fits in very securely and I have heard many other people talk highly of them and darrell is a nice guy, i had trouble installing mine called him and left a message and was called back soon and he walked me through what I should do. The mount was a few thousands big and had to take some metal off and it fits in great now.

Use a Darrells or S&K mount with an NCStar 2-7x32 pistol scope. I don't have a picture of that setup with my 91/30, but here's the same setup with my K98. The scope can be found in many places for about $50 (for non-IR model). So far it's held up well and the optics are fine for plinking at 100 yds.

Okay thats what i was looking for, I can never have a "stock" anything, I was thinking about putting a bipod on it too

If Darrel doesn't respond (he didn't for me for several months), then get the S&K mount. If you get the actual "SK" model of the SK Mount, it has built in proprietary 1" rings so there's no adjusting..which isn't a big deal on a long eye relief scope (pistol/scout). SK mounts also offer a weaver model and you'll have to get rings yourself.

I use a cheap-o ncstar 4x32 scope and it hasn't budged. For my 100 yard shooting it's more than adequate and easy to dial in and it hasn't moved in several hundred shots.

SK mount = $80ish probably..fully guaranteed to stay put..I'd use blue loctite on the screws
NCStar 4x32 pistol scop = $35 on ebay.

I use a Burris 2.75x20 scout scope in a Darrell's mount on my 91/59. Sure, the glass costs more than twice what I paid for the rifle, but I managed to destroy an NCStar in about 200 rounds.

NCStar are the really really cheap stuff.

Don't expect it to last on a Mosin since that has some real good impulse acceleration and recoil.

I can only recommend it for the price.

If you go that route do not buy use as it is probably some else's problem child that broke and no longer keeps zero that is sold over and over till some honest person stops that nonsense.

I think the NCStar hold up OK on a soft recoil firearm like a 22LR and maybe even up to a 5.56mm on the very gentle AR rifle.

A lot of folks say they have a NCStar on their Mosin and it works fine for 10 years now, except they did not exist 10 years ago and they only shot 40 rounds through it once at the rane.

NCStar is a very very very nice airsoft gear that is so good it can be used on a 22 LR or soft recoil weapon. I do not recommend it on a Mosin unless it is more for a conversation piece (nothing wrong with that, especially since it is a lot cheaper to buy a NCStar for a scope that just sits).

If you like to gamble go ahead and buy one. Go ahead and really gamble by getting a used one cheap.

Sometimes this works, like I bought used Barska scope ($240 retail at sportsman guide) for $80 cash for my experimental 50 cal AR upper conversion. I could not get myself to buy a scope that cost twice as much as the rifle. So far it has worked for over 120 rounds. I know I am not at this time going to get into 50 Cal shooting really heavy and it is more of a conversation piece shooting in the outback or range where I may shoot 5 rounds and let others shoot a round or two. I expect this scope to eventually fail but hoping it lasts long enough for me to decide if I want to do the 50 cal thing really heavy.

If you think you are going to do something similar and not shoot your Mosin much then maybe a NCStar is acceptable.

As you can see after I have had two fail on me (I took the hammer to them rather than sale them to some other poor fool).

I was thinking of maybe something like a bushnell, or a burris. Maybe even a red dot sight... who knows

Yes, NcStars ARE cheap, but they work for what I use them for. All I want to do is be able to see the target at 100 yds. Yeah, maybe I don't have hundreds of high-powered rounds through rifles using them, but I do have at least a hundred without a problem, and I can buy 3-4 NcStars (or more) for every Bushnell, Burris, or whatever. When I'm trying to put some optics on many rifles, those $200 scopes add up. Not everybody has the budget for great optics, and my used mil-surp rifle isn't a $1000 target gun, so these cheap scopes work for me.

Now Famous Maker are cheap-a** scopes, I've had two break on me on a .223 rifle after less than 50 rounds. I also have a Barska that is very blurry at the upper ranges of magnification. I'd take an NcStar over either of those makes. Yes, I know these are the bottom of the barrel, and I do have better scopes on my better rifles, but sometimes cheap is all you need or want.
