Lol, M1D doesn't have holes drilled. It has a block installed over the barrel to attach the scope mount.

the official nomenclature of the device affixed to the muzzle of the rifle pictured is M2 Flash Hider. Also correct for a U.S.G.I. M1D would be the T37 Flash Suppressor. with 4 prongs, it resembles an early M16 flash suppressor.
maybe DoJ prefers hiders over suppressors; there is a difference.MAGAComment

Congrats on the M1D.
I overnighted my order for a service grade M1D when they were announced in 2010 thinking they would sell out fast. Boy was I wrong. 4 years later and the supply still hasn't dried up. Still, one of my favorite Garands (my only 6 digit) and I'm glad I was able to buy one.
I don't know much about the repo M84s. I've heard both good and bad, but have never seen one up close. Original scopes have shot up in value, so given what you said, a repo might be your only option.
If it were me, I would try to invest the money in a real USGI mount though. I've looked at a few repos and they seemed really cheap to me. My USGI mount has been rock solid from day one and fits perfectly. If you are going to spend the money, personally, this is where I would spend it.
As for cheek pads, you will spend a lot for the 1950's dated ones, but the USGI 60's and 70's dated ones tend to be more reasonable and can be found on E-Bay. I have seen a few repos and they are decent given the price ($25-50) and will definitely do the job. I have the screws for mine, but never used them on the stock. It fit fine with the lacing and I didn't want to ruin the stock I had drilling holes in it.
I never purchased a flash hider, but they can still be found pretty reasonably too. If I did buy one, I would of went with the T37 as mentioned by 2761377.
HXP ammo is fine. M1Ds are no different then other USGI Garands with the exception of block and shortened front hand guard.
I'd love to see photos of it when you get it.Last edited by Rozzi; 07-15-2014, 10:03 PM."Sometimes the bravest meet death with their deeds known only to heaven." --S.L.A. MarshallComment

screwing it to the stock? Thanks for all the help and input guys. It's a Service grade M1D.
I will follow the advice posted here and will get an original mount with a reproduction scope and a T37 flash hider. Used leather off E bay and I'll skip screwing it to the stock.
Keep the info coming please. This has been really helpful.
I'll post pics soon to thank you for the help.
here's mine, i laced mine.
