Which surplus rifle?

It has been a quite while sense i went into a turners or big 5 and bought a mosin with all the toys. big 5 now is smart and charges extra for a HEX. this Big 5 had 2 at 209 each. i think i will get one on the next sale. going to have fun looking for a double stamp or ex sniper. At the least i will find a good bore with WW2 wood and have some good old fashioned fun . i now have a few more valuable rifles but i sure did have fun at first finding and buying them.

I have owned many and still have many and will say my favorite C&R is still my Finn M39. My Enfield is a close second, but .303 ammo is pricey.

The swiss is a nice rifle, I have shot one. I never wanted one though. I would rather have a battle rifle that has probably seen war and is 1/3 the price. The small increase in accuracy means little to a lot of us.
I can get a Ruger American in 308 for under 400 bucks that most likely will out shoot the K-31.

1/3rd the price would be the $99 Mosin. I'll take the Swiss K-31. In my lab, there is a lot more than a little difference in accuracy between the two.

I think you should get the Italian Carcano Briane. Then you won't be buying a great rifle just before I try to buy it.

If you want fun and accurate shooting, great looks and bucket loads of historical significance get a Lee Enfield. Anything else is just a rifle. Admitted pricey ammo unless you start reloading though.

+1 the Enfield has the smoothest action and it has a ten round magazine. I have a No. 4 Mk. 2 that shoots like a dream. They are a bit more pricey than a typical Mosin, but they are so worth it. .303 ammo is more pricey than the surplus 7.62x54R, but not too long ago the .303 surplus ammo was cheap and plentiful too.

I can't think of one thing a MN does better than other milsurp rifles of WW 1 & 2.
smoother action no. more accurate nope. better made .
does it work properly and is it simple to maintain yes. they are cheap to own and shoot. If i could still get a German K98 for 150 dollars and all the 8 mm i want for .18c i would rather have a mauser for sure. Still the MN is fun to own and shoot just like the other C&Rs. you just can't beat dependable, powerful and cheap.
The draw back to some rifles is the price of ammo. the vast majority will never re load and paying more then 20 dollars for a box of bullets to shoot up in 10 minutes at the range is not practical. So the MN will always appeal to people that just want to shoot cheap surplus ammo and have a good time. for what it has to offer it can't be beat.

LOL, OP now you know the pitfalls of C&R Collecting -- how can you resist getting at least one of every example that interests you: how else can you experience a multitude of different designs and actions, usually at less than half the cost of a decent current-production gun? and if you get tired of one, you will get at least what you paid for it

My wallet keeps me in check, haha. I've spent WAAAY too much this month on rifles... and I still have rent to pay, haha
