    Which surplus rifle?

Hi, everybody. I'm currently deciding on a new surplus rifle. I have an M-1 that I shoot the heck out of, but I'd really like a nice bolt-action too.

I'm considering a Mosin because it sure has caught my eye lately....ammo is cheap....

But I've been kicking myself for 15 years for walking away from a $180 German 98K that was in terrific shape. Prices have gone much higher now. The Yugo M48 looks nice, and my family is from Yugoslavia (or Croatia, specifically) so it would be nice to have something from the "old country" but is it better than the German model? Is it worth looking for a German Mauser or is the Yugo a good shooter? All I want is a shooter, I'm not collecting "the guns of the Axis & Allies".

Mosin-dirt cheap to buy and shoot
M1903-same caliber as the m1 so no change for caliber
K98-accurate, need to reload as ammo is tough to come by.
I support peace through superior firepower.

There's only one to consider, Mauser.

Get yourself a couple of Mausers. Get a K98 if you want nice, and a Swedish is you want nice and accurate. Yes, price has increased greatly over the last several years, but they aren't going any lower. Get them now while they're still reasonable. If you just want something to tide you over a Mosin is hard to beat. Not nearly as "nice" or refined as a Mauser, but serviceable and cheap. Think AR versus AK.

if you just want to have fun get a Mosin M-44. At 100 yards i can shoot 5 out of 5 rounds into my steel plate with open sights and 66 year old eyes. the ammo costs .18c to shoot.I left the mauser and the Garand home.

Seriously, you shouldn't choose. Just get each one you want over time. There is absolutely no reason to think you will never want the one you don't get. Once you get a mosin, you will think you should get a Mauser, and then you will think you should get a 1903, no.4 mk1, Swiss k31, etc.

Just make a plan and get them all. They are all historic, amazing rifles each for their own reasons. Prvi makes ammo for all these and is relatively cheap.

On the lower end, you could do a Mosin 91/30 (under $200) or a M48 Yugo Mauser (just over $200). On the higher end, you could get a Mosin PU Sniper (Classic has them right now, $600ish) or a German K98 Mauser ($600ish).

All four are rock solid shooters that you will not regret buying.

Please check out the PU Sniper before you make your final decision. Those are really something special.

PM me if you need help finding one of the above after you have made up your mind about what to get.

Thank you for the input, everybody.

I know it's easy to say "get them all" but I'm trying to fight the sickness of having three safes full of guns. You should see how many humidors I have for cigars....that's another sickness!

A Mosin is a good entry-level bolt action gun.
However a M48 (0r it's cousin the 24/47) is a good 8MM-type gun, without the cost of a K98). Briane1911a1 - I know what you mean about the K98 prices, the have gone through the roof in the past couple of years!

Uhh, although the same caliber of rounds, they do not take the same round. A normal 30-06 will bend the op rod on the M1

Seriously though, A M48 is a great rifle, but a Swedish Mauser is a better one. They are incredibly accurate and very mild in the recoil department.

MN PU Sniper if you can afford it, then an Enfield .303 either MK 1 or No 4, ........if funds an issue a MN is a good entry level, if you can find a K98 RC or better yet matching scoop it up.
