the "kick" is the best part of shooting those things! plus i love how everything stops at the range to see who is shooting the cannon..

Oh, they'll always 'kick', a pad just keeps the rifle from beating you up.

It's not fair to be judgemental of how much recoil another person can take. Not everybody is a hunk of burning love like you are, Predator.

On the other hand, the M39 (and any of the other WWII bolt guns) can be recoil managed if fired properly from the shoulder. Remember this: the butt should not be in the "pocket" of your shoulder. Rather, the medial (towards in the middle of your body) edge of the steel butt plate should rest on the edge of your pectoral muscle. That's your natural recoil buffer.

Also, never shoot with your mouth open, even if your lips are closed. NEVER shoot with your tongue between your teeth. And, finally, make sure you are not too close to the sights/receiver. I wrecked a 12-day old, $140 high-index lens in my CK glasses that way when someone set my FAL's rear sight all the way forward and I, unthinking, snuggled up real good and close to the metal. I should be glad, though, that I was wearing glasses as it would have been my eyeball otherwise.

fire off 100 or so rounds in a short period and you`ll be looking for some relief! shoulder pad for me works fine for my bolt guns with those nice steel buttplates.

Some guys are skinny and that recoil bangs muscle against bone and is a bruiser.

Other guys have an excess of fat that acts like a recoil pad and that extra lard they have in their shoulder comes in handy when shooting a lot. Those guys usually don't feel a thing and thump their chest about their manliness ability when it was the daily dinner of beer and potato chips that created a built in recoil pad.
