    The day approacheth

Two of our family friends have finally decided to learn to shoot; so two new shooters will be there. Both are the most level headed people I have ever met, and very common sense when it comes to safety. We've gone over the three cardinal rules a few times already, and they can recite them.

    I think they'll do well.

Looks like I have 3 more coming with me.
Finally got the latch and combo dial broke loose on the gunsafe that's been froze up for 5 yrs, waiting on the manufacture to send me the lost combo. Hopefully I'll have it by the end of this week. Other than my Trap guns, I can't even remember what's in it! On the bright side, it'll be like Xmas in June.

Oh this is going to be FUN: Trap bringing a bunch of new guns!

Alright, and as to anybody who is concerned about yours truly, safety wise: if I did in fact screw up, I am very, very sorry, and I mean that.
It was not intentional, and was a gross slip up on my part, and I will do my best to never have that happen again.

Safety has been, and will always be my first and main concern in regards to these shoots: the fact that I screwed up has shaken me to my core.

Hence, I'm going to bring this up for a vote:

An idea was thrown my way about a "probationary period", and I thought it deserved a group decision wether or not to adopt it.

It goes like this: if you, shooter X, commit a safety violation, you are welcome back to shoot with the group on one condition: that at the next shoot, you ask someone there to be a shooting partner/range officer for you when you're shooting. They can be shooting next to you or something, but just have to keep an eye on you when you're shooting.
If the range officer says that you did not break another rule and were safe, you're welcome back as a self-policing member.

Does everyone think that this is an acceptable and sufficient disciplinary action?

We all can make mistakes, but they should also not go unmentioned or just with a "don't do I again, bud" pat on the shoulder. That does not promote safety.

And since we're on this topic, I'm going to emphasis it again: we are all range officers when we are there!
If you see another person break a rule or do something unsafe, as a fellow shooter it is your responsibility to tell that person.
It is dangerous not to do that and you are putting yourself, that shooter, and others at risk by NOT bringing it up.

With all of this said, I am excited to see you all again, and am definitely going to be asking someone there to watch me while I shoot.

We are suppose to be old enough to follow rules. If someone is told about a mistake they should correct it and not do it again. They should not need a mommy to watch them. If they prove to continue to be unsafe then they should leave. The group should help them to leave if needed.

There is no need to yell or belittle anyone about mistakes. Simply telling them and maybe offering a safe way should be enough.

Remember when guys(usually not ladies) have a firearm they seem to get a big ego, full of themselves, etc and get real butt hurt when called on something they may or may not have done wrong. They also often lash out at anyone who points out the mistakes. This is not the way it should be but it is the way it happens. The trick is to correct mistakes without starting a scene.

Hit with a .44 in the foot at spenceville 10 years ago. Was blasting away with my shotgun and I felt something hit my foot. Kinda felt like a small rock. I looked down and saw a tore up piece of lead by my toe. I picked it up and retuned it to the guy who was shooting steel plates with his S&W.

I agree 100%, and the bolded especially.

But, "should" and reality are sometimes two different things unfortunately: underlined in point.
I think it would be a good second layer of safety to watch the shooter who messed up to make sure that it was just a slip up, and that the shooter is not in fact a fundamentally unsafe person that we do not want at the range.
An in-depth safety check and review, basically.

Is the 'probationary period' idea necessary? Probably not. But I am (and some others are as well) a huge proponent of the "rather safe than sorry" mantra when it comes to shooting, at least until it too regulated and complicated for its own good.

Mind you, this could be a "too regulated" situation; I'm just being extremely cautious right now: call me Sally if I'm acting crazy about this.

                  OK Sally

I have always kept an eye on anyone that has shown an unsafe manner. I do not need to hoover over them but I do pay attention.
Actually I am aware of all those around me and the whole shooting line when at the range. It is just a habit I have developed over the years. Not just for safety but to see what they shoot and how they shoot. Maybe it is the teacher in me.

                    NorCal C&R Shoot @ Oroville June 28th!

                    Still planning on being there.

How long is this event planned to be? Any ideas on how much ammo to bring? Minimum?

Are folks shooting handguns as well, or should I just bring my sidearm and leave the rest at home?

My current plan is a 10/22, an AR, a Mosin M39, and my new Winchester model 70.

Bring it all, the range features handgun and rifle distances.
...but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

Bring anything you want! The range has berms from 10 to 400 yards.
It goes as far as the last person stays; sometimes until 2PM or 3PM.

I have been there from 7AM to about 2PM on one occasion (waiting for Mr_Dunev to arrive from so cal to pick up a motorcycle) and there were still calgunners shooting when I left. It was also the first time I ran out of ammo to shoot.

Bring whatever you feel like shooting and enough ammo to feed it for as long as you want to stay.

I'll likely bring a Mosin, a couple of Mausers, an AR, a Camp 9, a couple of .22 rifles, a 1911, a shotgun and some black powder pistols. Maybe less if the pile looks too big to clean afterward.
Just taking up space in (what is no longer) the second-worst small town in California.

I'm normally there for about 4 hours, but I don't have as far to drive as many of the other folks. If I was driving 2 hours plus, I'm sure I would stay longer.

I'm only maybe 40 minutes out... but I shoot every Sunday, so I don't feel the need to get all my shooting out at once.
