    I think I bought a Mitchell - lol

It was reasonably priced - so out comes the C&R and COE -

Get it home - to look at more closely.
    1. Over polished matching numbers bolt.
    2. the remains of what I think "might" be an X on the right side of the receiver.
    3. Horribly mismatched stock parts -
    4. Sanded stock.
    5. No import mark anywhere, though -

I think someone bought an early Mitchell - replaced the butt-plate, and installed Lyman sights.

I'm going to remove the sights and slip it into a WW2 configuration stock, maybe trade out the bolt with a blued one - it will make a good movie gun.

    Thoughts?

I don't doubt it - the sights are terrific, too.

However with the Lyman on it, it is no use to me as a movie gun, it won't come off without a struggle that might damage something.

I just went on line - and I am pretty much 100% sure it's a Mitchell - how funny, I have made such fun of that guy over the years.

Anyone with a C&R + COE and an RC K98 wanna trade?

Came with some WW2 German 9mm that is quite rare - so not a bad morning.

If you got it for a good price then who cares. It is the people who pay big bucks for the faked Totenkopf SS models with the "letter of provenance" and nifty cardboard box who are the losers. I wouldn't have any issue scoring clean Mitchell M48 or K98 on the secondary market.

Early on in my Mauser interest I spoke to the sales guy for Mitchell's. I was immediately turned off by the fact that said they'd have to ship the rifle to an FFL01 even though I am a FFL03 holder and they are local to me in So. Cal.

JP Sauer and Sons, Suhl, my personal favorite manufacturer. That Lyman is probably 10x better than the notch, maybe shoot it and try it out?

It is a very efficient sight - you are correct!

This post was really just a quick study on what a Mitchell is, because it caught me out, I was not really fussing too much - excuses, excuses, lol. I am sure most of the avid collectors here would have sussed it immediately.

The WW2 police issue (black primer ink) 9mm ammo was a fun find.

never herd they were bad rifles, only problem was lies about being something they are NOT. they seem to do a lot of work on them for the price.

You should be able to make that into a movie rifle pretty easily, just remove the sight, fill the holes with epoxy (or even screw blanks) and cold blue the bolt.

It won't be perfect, but it would be fine for a movie where it won't be studied in detail, except possibly by gun nuts on here or gunboards.

If you want to unload it, I may be interested if the price is right.

I'd shoot it and find out how good it might be. Maybe you found the rare 1/4 inch grouper. (the fish that is)

That was a bag of old ammo at the same estate sale -
                            .38 special, .30-30 and some .38-WCF, .38 S&W.
I was sorting through it - it's old so the lead has oxidized.

I'm convinced that I bought a Mitchell's M48 a couple years back. The condition was immaculate, bluing crisp, stainless parts buffed to a shine, and the stock was blonde (a common indicator of a Mitchell M48. Can't verify this of course because I got it on the secondary market from a gentleman who said he picked it up at a pawn shop.

I'm in no way bummed however, its a beautiful rifle, the nicest of all my Yugos. And considering its a historically insignificant piece, I don't really mind if it was refurbished my Mitchell's.
