I know the gunsmith screwdriver bits don't completely prevent buggering screw heads, but they sure do help a lot. Heaven knows I need all the help I can get.

Don't blame yourselves, an armourer has the correct tools, its the Primitive Pete's of the world who tighten the screws until the threads start to smoke and then give the screw two more full turns.

Great thread - thanks guys -

Only one stands out in my head, driver head was too narrow for grip screw on an Imperial Luger - all matching - I sulked for three days, mad at myself - it was blued, so I didn't want to have at trying to fix it - just left it alone.

Fix it, spin it in the drill and polish it. Then hold it by the threads with a long pair of needle nose pliers. Use a propane torch and play the flame over the head of the screw, until it turns a cobalt blue. Right when it does, drop it in a jar of ATF.
It's called fire bluing, both Colt and the older Lugers did it the same way.

I have found that this set works really good for me. Not even once had I buggered any screws.

Saw that one. I was wary of it because of all the "bits are junk" reviews, but, then again, it's better to have a bit twist than ruin a screw because the bit was too hard.

Aah! The bits do not twist. Only once, about 4'ish years ago one broke on me. It was my fault by using some leverage. It was replaced and again, never had any issues.
