How many of you guys put emphasis on a rifle having unmolested screws? It drives me up a wall when I ding up a screw that was especially tight. I'm wondering if I'm the only one.

Unmolested Screws

You are not the only one but, you can prevent that from happening if you use the correct gunsmithing screwdriver bits."TRUST BUT, VERIFY"

I dished a screw on an OG trapdoor.
I paid 30 bucks for another one sight unseen. With a dish in it...
Its a constant reminder of my stupidity. 100 years and I come along and bend the lips on a screw.
Use the proper driver.Last edited by SanPedroShooter; 02-11-2014, 5:19 PM.Comment

Nope, definitely not the only one who has buggered a screw head. I buggered one on my P14 rifle before deciding that I really needed a proper screwdriver set. I ordered a gunsmith set a couple of days later so that I won't repeat the same error.Comment

I have buggered up a screw even with a good gunsmithing set lol. Sometimes the medium one is too big and the smaller one is too small.....
I need to find the video but one of my AGI videos has a good way to fix a buggered screw head. Kinda neat IMO.Comment

I use an aluminum block with different size screw holes drilled into it to hold the screws while I peen the metal back in place. A piece of plastic tubing over the threads for clamping in the vise, or chucking in the drill.

I picked up the 44 bit Magna Tip Super Set and the Thin Bit set from Brownells. So far I have been very happy with them, they seem to fit all of the different screw heads I have needed them for. I should try them on the K31, it has the widest and thinnest slots on some of the screw heads.
They stand behind their product too in case you decide you don't like it. Great customer service too, one of the thin bits was messed up and they sent me a new one right away.
I just noticed Grafs still has their screwdriver set on sale.Comment

I've buggered stubborn screws even with a proper set of gunsmith's screwdrivers. I will also admit to having spent far more time peening and recutting a screw head than a new one would be worth just because that's the one that came out of that firearm.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!Comment

That's the excuse I use too. Most times it's because I'm too cheap to buy a new one.
Ever priced a screw set for a Colt SAA?

I've buggered one or two. Lousy feeling.
If I'm working on anything even remotely rare or valuable (or anything really), I use plenty of penetrating oil first, get a screwdriver head that FITS and lean on it. Really lean on it.
Get some good gunsmithing bits.It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.
You alone and our own have earned it with...Your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever.

Your all doing it wrong. Use belt sander to adjust 1 screwdriver untill it fits 1 screw. Use only craftsman or stanly 100 drivers. Thats way to do itComment

I have the Brownell Pro set and the Wheeler biggie. Brownell magna tips broke, broke, and broke again trying to disassemble a Pieta lever action rifle. The Italian rifles are known to have been put together by the screw gorilla at the factory. Wheelers have worked much better for me. You do get replacements from Brownells if you don't mind sending, mailing the little bugger, or two, or three, back and waiting for a new one (pain in the ash). Brownell's tip selection is better.Life is hard. Being stupid makes it harder. - John WayneComment
