    RC K98 approximate value

Buying my first K98, I've always wanted one. I came across this RC on arms list, it comes with an original bayonet and 60rds of ammo that aren't pictured. I believe there are only 2 pieces that having matching numbers, all the birds still intact. The seller said he bought it from Big 5 6 years ago and has only shot 20 rounds through it, so I'm assuming it's counterbored? Is this a good buy at $550 not including shipping, dros, and transfer? Thanks.

It's not c'bored. I paid $550 for mine a few mos back with intact birds and non matching

I think most people would say $500 is a good price

my local mauser guy wants 700 for a nothing special K 98 right now. I am sure the usual low ballers will chime in. if i just wanted a nice shooting looker it is hard to beat the Mitchel Mausers for 300 bucks. FN built in Serbia. like new.
Yes i know all about MM.

I don't know why the RC Mausers command such a high price, yes they have lineage/history but their refurbished non matching typically a crap shoot on bore condition. If your into shooting/competition with one, and a lot of buyers end up refinishing the refinished stock anyway. I don't see the pricing/collectability thing with these.

If you were really into shooting competing (instead of sleeping) with one you should be looking at the long (29.3") barreled ones made between the wars, prices are half, sight radius is longer, and you can refurbish all you want to have a great shooting rifle.

I'm not telling who you can sleep with, i'm just telling you "you can only sleep with so many at one time".

          $550 + shipping + FFL transfer fees + DROS fees = ~$700

This isn't a steal by any means, not for an RC. The redeeming qualities of this deal are that he's including an original bayonet. Those sell for around $100. However, I'd be more comfortable committing to the deal if he could knock a hundred bucks off. Then you'll be closer to the standard going price for Russian Captures these days.

Find out if the "original" bayonet is German. A Nazi era bayonet is worth at a bare minimum, $80. If it is "original" Yugo, it is worth about $20. If it is "original" Czech, it is worth more, probably $50 or so.

The ammo may add value as well, depending on what it is. Remington/Winchester/Hornady/Federal ammo costs about $35/box of 20. If it is Privi or S&B it costs about $20 a box.

Surplus is less, and if it is Iranian, frankly it adds almost no value.

K98, original bayonet, good ammo... I say $600 would be good and that is after fees.

Right now there are no large supplies of Russian k98's left it seems. Anyone who has an account w/ Century should ask them what they want for them. The cheapest last time I called was 550. They are now breaking down by codes, and some go for over 700 to 800 if you can believe it. You can find them once in a while on GunBroker for 400.00 more or less, but most are now over 500. Especially if they have the Nazi swastika intact, and not peened or center punched. I sold the last 3 for 550.00 w/ no problem.

                  Century is getting smart.

They are sperating the rifles by year and manufacture (as well as condition) and pricing them accordingly.

We bought one at Big5 3 years ago for $399 + fees. I guess they're getting scarce. I ended up removing the commie shellac and rubbing BLO on it. Came out really nice.

I got mine 5 or 6 years ago for around $300 at Big5 would have to dig out receipt to know for sure. I did the same thing Paulie did and removed commie shellac and oiled mine too, it looks really good.

I remember when I bought mine wholesale when they first came in, from Ellison's for $189. Every collector I knew laughed at my folly, saying the Russian captured K98's were worthless.

I wish I had bought a crate of them. It now rests in the safe, right next to the $150 Hakim and the $129 "HAND SELECT" Finn M39

Just this month, I picked up two (a Yugo Capture and a Russian Capture) for $500, plus a Laminate Hex Mosin for $150 before shipping and additional fees. And that was from a fellow Calgunner whose WTS ad was surprisingly passed over for nearly a week before I contacted him and struck a deal. Bargains are still out there. I regret not jumping on $300 K98s two/three years ago, but I was naive and still stuck to spending no more than two hundred bucks a rifle for C&R stuff. So I certainly have regrets, but I've learned that if you stay vigilant, you can still find great deals around. We're not so far away from the mass importation of these rifles that we have to jump on the first one that we see available and pay a hefty price for it. Just keep your eye out.

On the flip side, you will ultimately get your money back. As time does pass, these rifles will march up in price. As with most every C&R weapon. They just don't make 'em anymore. So eventually, you'll strike even. The choice comes down to how badly the OP wants a K98 at present time.

Now that I'm on my computer, I notice the date doesn't have the typical X through it like a typical RC has. Possible mix master Mauser non RC?
