^^^lol, wd-40 shouldn't be near guns. kroil is your friend for things like this, but definitely clean it and make sure it's dry without any residue afterward. having anything ignite in there would ruin your day. and hello condorguns! how was new years day business?

also, I left the WD-40 in, did not do much, so I decided to swap out the piston with another one I had. That piston worked just fine, so I believe I'll have to polish it up

long as the piston is in good shape you should be fine. clean it all up with hoppe's and let it dry before reassembling.

having some 00 steel wool around is helpful. You can use that with a little solvent to take the built up carbon and other gunk off the piston. Happy shooting!

Not sure where you guys got your misinformation, but WD40 has been used on guns pratically since it was invented. It's not meant to be a lubricant, it's a cleaner and should be wiped off just like any other cleaning product. I have used it for years for cleaning my all of my guns and it works great.

WD-40 was originally marketed as a gun product true, but it has proven to be a poor choice.

Using it as a cleaner is fine as long as you remove all traces of the product after cleaning as WD-40 over time will gum up and harden. it can also be hell on some gun finishes and don't get it anywhere near gold leaf inlays. Also remember that although it is a wonderful water displacer, it is not a good metal protector. wipe your firearm down with a good gun oil after cleaning to inhibit rust.

I'm a little old school and still love my Hoppes 9 for a solvent and Kroil for a penetrating oil. If I need a water displacer I have a air compressor or I just take the thing apart and dry it.

I want a Hoppe's No. 9 car air freshener. Getting to like the smell of Kroil too, even though it's kinda like Pine Sol. stuff sure to hell works though, I'd never consider another alternative. some folks even mix the 2, although I prefer my Hoppe's pure . have we got any result on this yet OP?

after reading what condor said, I am going to wash out the gas tube again a few more times, just to make sure all traces are gone. Bit worried about polishing the piston on my own, I don't want to mess it up ;o

Wet & dry sandpaper, 600 grit, and a little oil did the trick for me.
