The CMP forum says no special treatment for CA orders. They will just send you an email after the first with a request to tell them which FFL to ship your gun to. This is how they handled the NY orders after their restrictions went into effect.

I wish the OP luck in finding a nice Garand. But this thread can be summed up with the following key points:

        1) It is too late to order from CMP and get it before 01/14.
        2) It is too late to apply for a FFL03 + COE and receive them before 01/14
        3) No one is going to sell a Garand cash & carry before the end of the year at CMP prices. (At least not Service Grade prices)
        4) You CAN get a Garand now cash & carry before mandatory registration starts but you will simply have to pay more.

Good luck in your search. If you can find a nice Garand for 1K it is well worth the money and a fair price on the secondary market.

OP, you've got some pretty good advice from some pretty knowledgeable people. Here is where I see you at $$-wise.

          1. Cash and Carry pre-1/2014 is going for $900-$1000. Let's use $950 as a basis. The "good" thing here is, at least you get to see and inspect what you are buying first. post-1/2014 add $35 for PPT.

          2. Order from CMP with no FFL03 or COE (pre or post 1/2014) makes no difference. You would have to have it sent to an FFL anyway. That's $650 shipped (service grade) + $50 dealer fee (at least) + $25 DROS + $55 tax (estimated) = $780

          3. Order from CMP with FFL03 + COE (post 1/2014, too late for pre). You can have it shipped directly to you for $650 shipped (service grade) + $30 FFL03 + $95 COE + $19 self registration = $794. Note: your FFL03 will fulfill one of the requirements of the CMP to show proof of firearm related activity.

Your cheapest option is #2, just order from CMP directly no FFL or COE. 2014 doesn't affect you. Order and wait.

But here is where option #3 gets you, and for not much more cost. With FFL03 and COE, any other C&R rifles you decide to purchase online you save yourself $50 (dealer fee) + $25-$19 (DROS-self registation) + tax. Plus it gets shipped directly to you. For private party sales, you can still do a FTF in 2014 for a Cash and Carry or get it shipped to you, instead of a PPT at a dealer.

Or as Bobby pointed out, it'll be around $1000 +/- on the secondary market.

          Good luck with you search.

Thanks for laying it out and doing all of the math work, and thanks again for everyone's input.

Seems like most of the ones for sale right now are HRA.

For the service grade M1 Garands that CMP still has, does anyone know if they still have any WWII serial numbered ones available? I know that you can put in a note/request for them to try and get you one, but there are no guarantees for it. Just trying to see what the odds are as far as that goes.

You know, it just depends on what's in the crate. You'll get long periods where they're all older, or all newer, or all have great USGI stocks, or all need to get new stocks. And there's no point in trying to game it because if they have a ton of what you want by the time they get to your order they'll have something else.

In your calculations you might consider what happens if you buy more than one...

I think I am getting fairly close to just getting a C&R and COE license.

I am glad I got all 3 of my Garands for very reasonable prices, but if i were to lay down a grand for a nice Garand I would say it is worth it. Especially now because I don't have much interest in buying any more long guns after 01/14.

CMP is really inundated with orders right now, it will most likely take 3-4 months before they even process your order. In the meantime, you can apply for a C&R license and update CMP via phone, fax, or email once you get it.

So the odds are extremely slim if I overnight the hardcopy sales order for a service grade SA, the CMP could not fulfill it until after 01/01/2014?

What is the latest info on the CMP trying to complete California orders?

Or should I just figure on getting my COE to go along with my FFL03.
                        Thanks for your input.

I believe I saw a post by LoneGunman? That the CMP was not putting CA orders ahead of everyone else. IIRC it was from their forum posting.

You should send in your order, you may get lucky if you overnight it. If it doesn't ship until after 1/1/14 it will still be the best price around for a great rifle. You won't know what will happen until you submit your order.

My Garand was shipped overnight from Anniston and I got it exactly one day later. YMMV.

You wont believe how much fun you will have with a C&R. Save up some money, as the guns multiply!

Just on the collecting end, I have heard that the SA's can be from different drawing #'s? There seems to be a huge price jump when you get into original rifles (starting at around 2k). Can a Garand expert break it down for us?
