Want to buy a CMP M1 Garand now, what do I do?

So lately I've been having an itch to get an M1 Garand. I really want a SA for its historical significance, and if I can get one with a serial number that was during WW2, that'd be awesome. Even though the HRAs are more rare and possibly in better condition, the historical value is more important to me. I may even end up buying two, just to have both.

However, the issue is I don't have not applied for a C&R license yet, and it's already almost the end of the year with the new law regulations right around the corner.

What options do I have? I've tried searching locally, but it seems like SAs are scarce and people want more for their M1s than what CMP is selling them for.

Is the only difference after 1/1/14 is that I have to have a COE in addition to the C&R to purchase an M1 Garand from CMP? Is a COE just as easy to get as a C&R?

The secondary market will usually cost more than the CMP. Even on the CMP market forum, members pay/charge more than what the CMP charges. Expect to paid 800 plus for average service grade rifle.

The COE does not take much effort. I believe you fill out the from, have a live scan done instead of fingerprint cards and send it in. Its been a few years since I did mine.

If you only plan on purchasing one or two rifles. It maybe more cost effective to pay the dollar difference than investing the money and time to get your C&R and COE if you are not going to use them much.

BUT keep in mind that if you use the C&R/COE option next year. You will need to fill out a additional form and send a check (19.00?) to the state to register your rifle.

I was also checking locally, but decided to order a SA from CMP. If I do not get it by the end of the year, I will have it sent to an FFL01 and pay the extra fees for their involvement, DROS, and new registration. Those fees will still probably be less than getting a COE and FFL03, but it would sure be nice to have it shipped directly to one's house.

I think you'll need to look at the total picture and see what if any additional rifles you might want after the M1 Garand to see if the C&R + COE makes sense.

So here are several of your options

        1) Up until the end of the year if you find someone locally with it is just the cost of the rifle.

        2) After 1/1/14 , if you do a PTP it is the cost of the rifle plus the $35.00 transfer fee.

        3) IF you order from the CMP ( I think you have already passed the order cutoff for year end deliver ) , so assuming delivery after 1/1/14 , to get your C&R + COE + $19.00 rifle registration is round $154.00 , then you add in the cost of the rifle.

        4) IF you order from the CMP and have it sent to your local dealer, It is the dealer fee ( $50 -$200 depending on dealer) + DROS + Sales tax plus the cost of the rifle.

Franky if I was in your spot I would just pay the extra couple of hundred to get it before the end of the year with a FTF transaction.

i would put a WW 2 SA at the top of the list, i do not buy into HRAs being better. one problem i have with collecting is value based on rarity. SO WHAT. it is the same rifle. Just get a nice WW 2 SA and call it good. I did.

Either apply for a C&R + COE + the other stuff CMP requires (It is too late to have any chance of receiving this year).

Or order from CMP without the FFL03 and have it sent through a middle man 01

Or get gouged on the secondary market and buy one FTF now before mandatory registration kicks in.

There is no magic bullet here to solve the problem when it is already late November. Sort of a snooze and lose type thing. I would try to find the nicest one I could for 1K or less and go get it now. That is how much you will pay.

Check the market place here, saw someone selling one in your area do you can check it out in person and take it home same day. Just don't ever expect to pay cmp prices anywhere except the cmp. $700-800 should be the norm but its more like 900-1000. And then there are those nice guys selling them with the field and service grade tags on them for 1200-1500. Cmp= set, fair price. Private market=what someone is willing to pay.
                  Cheers

Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it.

I think I will wait on the C&R/COE until the end of the year, and if I can't source an M1 locally by then, I will go ahead and apply for those. I don't really plan on buying too many other C&Rs, but I guess you never know what may pop up and catch the eye.

So CMP will send the rifles directly to a FFL01 as well? If that's the case, do I need to provide them with any paper work (IE CMP affiliation, marksmanship, etc)?

I have an awesome local FFL that can do the transfer for me (free plug for sean @ RedField Armory), so I am not worried about high transfer fees.

You will still need to qualify as noted on the CMP website. CMP will send to the FFL of your choosing after 1/1/14

Do you really need to mail in the $19 form?

You might try ordering from the CMP and see if they can process your order befor the 1st. They aer trying to get all CA orders done first for that reason.
