i'll admit I never had much interest in garands, I finally shot one about a month ago and enjoyed it. that said, I still have more interest in the oddball bolt guns, mostly because they're more affordable for me but also just seem to have more character. i'd really like to get an m1 garand but I might run out of time. guess i'll just have to get one later on when I can afford it and move to a free state. nice grab Bobby and I hope you enjoy it.

Being new to Garands, I finally worked up the courage to take it apart and familiarize myself with the components and nomenclature of the weapon. The videos I watched seemed to make it look harder than it actually was, as I didn't really have any difficulty with it. I feel for GI's who had to fieldstrip and keep track of all the little parts in a field or combat environment.

The good news is that I could not see any wear whatsoever on any of the internal parts, and the barrel is brand new (Danish VAR). All of the parts I could find markings on were either Springfield Armory or Beretta.

I have never used 'grease' on a firearm as a lubricant but everything I read points to the fact that regular oil (I use EZoxx) is not sufficient for a Garand and actual grease has to be used in some areas.

I will finally get to shoot this rifle in the next couple of weeks when my CMP ammo arrives so I will post up a range report. I can't imagine any issues because this rifle could have passed for a brand new rifle inside and out.

Looking forward to that range report Bobby.

If all the metal is OK and the accuracy is a little off, be sure to check the stock to metal fit. As I understand it, Garands can be a bit finicky if the stock fit is not just right.

Thanks for reminding me... I forgot to mention that the receiver to stock fit is very snug. It initially took me a minute to get the receiver out of the stock. I detect zero slop whatsoever in the fit of anything. Since the stock is numbered to the receiver, I am guessing (hoping) that it was fitted properly by whoever made the stock.

Thanks! The GI nylon sling in the pic has been replaced with a repro 1907 leather one.

I have about 500 rounds as a 'strategic reserve', and a couple cans inbound from CMP. Ideally, will keep 1K of ammo just in case and shoot off whatever I have over that amount.

If you can find some black tip '06 put that in with your strategic reserve. It is true steel core armor piercing, good for punching through metal doors or maybe an engine block. I have a hundred rounds of it myself. I see it for sale here and there.

That thing looks nice. I have a few Danes from back when CMP was blowing them out and they all have "character" with a lot of WWII era parts mixed with a bit of PB or BMBs. Still oozing cosmo 10 years later. Get yourself some of that AMA 30-06 for the complete package!

Mr. Orlando,, the VAR barrels meet or EXCEED the requirements for a NM barrel. If I can find the relevant article again I will post it.

Will need more than a written article , need arsenal specs.
VAR barrels are accurate but they arent match.

The only thing I know is that this Garand meets or exceeds the requirements for being AWESOME.

Where do you shoot? I'd like to see that one up close. Is it a DCM/CMP rifle?

Yep its a nice rifle and once you shoot it you may forsake your other collecting endeavors fer awhile.

If it's a DCM/CMP you can get a letter from them if you don't have the Cert that came with it.
I hadn't shot any of my Garands for a few years, so early last summer I took one out to the Range to meet up with some fellow workers. Last thing we shot was the Garand, they liked it and I had forgotten how nice they were to load, fire, and piiiiing! Anyway after they left I spent another almost 2 hours by myself shooting the Garand. I've never had that type of "awakening" with ANY of my other firearms and I do have an assortment to choose from. It rather surprised me.

Bobby, while u have it apart check inside the stock for rub marks from the op rod, some are a tight fit and if rubbing will slow down the action and screw with your accuracy. Check the barrel channel and the 45 degree angle where the op rod handle is. The wood will look shiney if rubbing.
As for grease I use mobil one on all my garands, just on the bolt lugs and the op rod pocket, with a little on the bottom of the bolt. enjoy,, Garands are very addictive,I have quite a collection.
