Dean's Gun Restorations now does Tankers as well, but does them to original commercial specs (18 in barrel). I am debating whether to have Shuff do mine or Dean's.......Dean's stock work just seems so much better.

Schuff's Mini-G......Opinions

wow, this is a tough one. 99.99% of the time, I'd argue guns are metal and wood, and are designed to be shot. unless a particular one of them has a unique historical place such as THE gun used by such and such, or whatever. like that mosin stalin was holding over his head in the picture. drill that one, go to hell
and some milsurps really don't have a unique historical place. most mausers (swedes, chilean, spanish, et al.) didn't see combat, or significant combat, and as such, well, you know, aren't carrying on some legacy. although the mosin's legacy was oppression of millions of eastern europeans, so do your own calculations!! and if millions of a particular rifle exist, a small percentage that get drilled or whatever, the overall inventory isn't terribly affected.
and of course ammo is a concern. unless it's still a current issue round, I guess 7.62x54 still is, surplus ammo will run out. which means they will eventually run out of gas so to speak unless one reloads. 6.5x55 is now either commercial or reloader.
I get the "collector" thing, but beauty and value are eye of the beholder issues. it's an intangible and as such, everyone's will differ.
garands truly are special and in special ways. there are still plenty of guys around, though dwindling, who carried one in combat. there are plenty of people whose dad or maybe grandfather carried one in combat. and we aren't talking about some little skirmish or asterik in a history book. nope. those rifles defeated nazi germany and imperial japan. the single greatest event in world history, and the garand was the deciding factor. it's more than a sum of its parts. I know for a fact I lost relatives in gas chambers. I'm kinda fond of the garand for making sure that got cut short.
I'm going to send one of mine to dean's or maybe fulton to be refurbed: new barrel ('06), re-parkerized, new stock, etc., but it will be in original configuration. is that on the same plane as a shuff's job? maybe, maybe not. depends on the person.
but, I do think the carbine garand is way cool and I'd love to have one. I'd always hoped for a mini14 in 308 but bill never got it working right, though I read he tried. and the receiver is still there and can be set back to original.
in the end really it's just a gun. it's yours, do whatever you want and enjoy it. I'd much prefer the guy who does that to the one who wants to take them all away.NRA Life Member since 1990
They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

They still have the Navy Barreled receivers that say to expect some pitting for $350. I wish I had gotten their receivers when they had them. However I was behind the ball on those.sigpicto secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
How's that make you feel?Comment

It's kind of not a good deal.....$350 for what may just be a pitted receiver if the barrel isn't serviceable.Comment

I was looking DGR & Fulton Armory both make tankers with 18 1/4" barrels. Shuffs Mini G has 16.1 barrels and The Garand Guy has tankers with 17 1/2" barrels. Is there anyone else still making tanker types out of the M1 Garand?sigpic
