I converted a old one back in late 70's into a parts cleaner, hooked up to my air compressor, could hold a VW cylinder head.

Yeah those things are cool, I think Ammo Bros still have them. Be careful though, just because it will hold a LOT of your ammo does not mean that your back can move it. Hurt my back pretty good moving those things full of yummy 8mm and x39.

They do hold a lot of ammo so for $20 it is a great deal

I've thought about getting one to put ammo in but a friend of mine has one that he keeps .308 in. Just too damn heavy to move, it's a 2 man lift just to make sure you don't hurt your back. The fat 50's are the biggest cans I'll use now.

kinda sounds similar to the 32 round 40mm cans that look like this

The cans to try for are the 25mm, they are great

I have some 20mm cans left over from my military service. Fill that thing with ammo, 20mm or otherwise and you will need two men to move it. Well maybe not .22lr...

Mine are stamped 'light' on the lids. Must be a GM joke or something. Funny now, not so funny trying to get loaded cans out of a magazine, up a ladder and through a hatch.

I wouldn't underestimate the weight of .22lr. I have a 50cal can filled with 3700 rounds of .22 and that thing is pretty heavy. I can only imagine how heavy a 20mm can would be,..... good gosh let me bring a dolly or a forklift.

I picked up an ammo can recently that I haven't seen before. Hinged lid that opens from the side. Marked .50 Cal M2 API Linked and has the flaming bomb/US stamped on the ends of the can. All the other .50 Cal cans I have open from the end.

That sounds like the WWII era .50 caliber can. I got a bunch of Yugo surplus 30-06 from 1957 that came in those cans. The Yugoslavians had just stenciled the new content description over the old American markings.
