    NEED HELP WITH MOSIN

    Hello,

I did some very light, I mean VERY light work on my Mosin trigger, and now about 70% of the times, the rifle will dry fire when the bolt is being closed (pushed down).... I can't diagnose the exact issue, as when it doesn't do this, I cannot make it fire by doing anything (buttstock on ground, play with trigger, push on bolt, nothing) except by pulling the trigger, which is still probably about 9lbs....

SO WHAT DID I MESS UP???

    UPDATE!!!!

It does not do it when pressure is applied (forward) to the bolt when closing, and seems to be not happening as much now.... I actually think it was doing this before I did the trigger work (just got it)

You can't expect us to tell you how to fix it if you don't tell us what you did to it...

          I followed this tutorial.

I didn't remove nearly as much material as he did., and basically just buffed those contacts.

NOW, after messing with this, and seeing it happen, I realize that it was doing it BEFORE i touched the trigger mech. I took it out for the first outing about a week ago, and about 5 times I noticed the cocking nob (not correct name) would be forward even after I cycled a round in...

Basically, I don't think this is related to my trigger work. I just noticed it now.

I wonder what's wrong with it. They're generally pretty hard to screw up...

ETA: I just noticed I made your sig line.

I think my sear isn't making enough contact. I think I may be able to make it with some work....

Worst case scenario here seems to be buying a new sear and cocking knob.

Could it be that the leaf spring isn't pushing back enough on the sear part so that it catches against the cocking piece?

I think the spring steel with sear on it is not going deep enough into the receiver to catch, I think your trying to say the same thing (better than me).

I'm going to increase the amount of petrusion and see if I can still get it to slam fire.

Yes, that's what Im trying to say...that the small part isn't coming up high enough to hold the cocking piece back like it should. Maybe that spring is just tired and old.

Yup. Same exact thing I'm thinking. I will try some of my own altering first, then probably order a new one. Ill mess with it more in the morning. Thanks for your input!

That was your first mistake. Those clowns are only good at blowing up nice rifles.

Not a great idea to do trigger work and then test it out going hot at the range.

Take the action out of the stock. Then cycle the bolt , you can see everything happening. Mosin action is simple as can be. Check sear screw, trigger pin. Could be bent sear, cocking knob got filed down, or sear engagement is extremely negative

While you may have messed up one of the parts, they're very inexpensive and can be bought in many places.

if you put too much shim under the sear it will do that. if you did shim it remove the shim and start over.

If you have to shim a Mosin sear to get a good trigger pull, you are doing it wrong!!

Listen to what Vlad posted above about the sear engagement being too negative. That is probably 99% of your problem.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.
