    Springfield 1903

I just picked this up today, I am curious to know more about it.

It was beat up a bit, but the rifling was in good shape, and the price was right for me.

WW2 rebuild. Looks like the stock has been cut down (bubba was here), missing hand guard and rear barrel band. The S on the barrel indicates it was made by Sedgely. Check to see if the receiver has a hole drilled on the front left side, also known as a Hatcher hole indicative of USMC.

      Is this a hatcher hole?

The "S" Sedgley marked USMC barrels were replacement barrels, and don't actually indicate US Marine usage. The "Hatcher" hole would be on the left side of the receiver, not the bolt.

Signs of USMC use, here's what to check for:
          Hatcher hole.

          Stippled butt plate.

Electropenciled serial number on the bolt or underside of bolt.

That sex change is just not right. Time to bring that rifle back to it's original configuration as much as possible. Its the right thing to do. Other than that you did good.

Yeah, I'm in for some heavy restoration. No, it is not a marine corps rifle, doesnt have the hatcher hole or any of the other signs.
Anyone have an extra original stock lying around? lol

Anyone have any experience with these guys?
I'll need a handguard, lower band + screw + swivel, upper band + screws + swivel, stock and a lower band spring.
I'll come in pretty well under what a decent 1903 is going for if I get all this for $200.

I haven't had good luck with parts from SARCO.
I got a lot of junk repro parts, wrong parts and wood parts that were not as described.
Their customer service is not so good.
I mostly buy parts and stocks from the following, at least you get good stuff.

                  Liberty Tree Collectors:

                  Springfield Sporters:

                  Bill Ricca:
Find information, resources and relevant links for billricca.com. This domain may be for sale.

                  Numrich:
                  '03 parts

                  '03 Stocks/handguards

Numrich is kind of a toss-up, most of the time you get USGI stuff, but sometimes they will slip you a repro.
Read the descriptions carefully; New made = Repro...

Thanks Rustybore. You put the liberty tree link for both it and the springfield sporters, by the way. I was confused at first.

Will A3 parts work on a 1903? Specifically the ones I need?

I 'restored" a 1942 1903 about a year ago. I needed pretty much the same parts you needed. i ended up winning an auction on fleabay for a complete stock set with all hardware for less than $200 bucks. Still would like to grab a sling and bayonet for the rifle. I have less than $350 in the entire rifle. Good luck.

The A3 handguard is completely different than an 03 handguard. Many of the replacement stocks will work for both the A3 and the 03. The A3 bands, while not correct for the 03, may work. The correct A3 bands are stamped while the correct 03 bands are milled.

Like the above posters said, the latter (WWll) replacement stocks will work for both the '03 and the '03A3. The handguards are totally different. The stock bands and sling swivels for the '03 are milled, the ones for the '03A3 are stamped metal. Ebay could your best bet for some parts, specially the stock and handguard.

Sorry for the wrong link, it is fixed now.

You can also take a look at Northridge International, they seem to have some stocks.
